What do you think is missing from the writing community as it stands today?

If you submit to this at all and they bite, GET AN AGENT. Send queries that say smth like "emergency rep request, contract in hand". Do not soldier into this un-agented. Treat publishers like a large company with an army of lawyers with company focused interests, bc they ARE.
