One important caveat: the standard deduction is a blunt national number. Cost of living in Mississippi is not the same as NY or SF. But geographic deductions would make the tax code more complicated and politically messy.

ChatGPT's preferred design would be: Set the standard deduction around the full-time minimum “basic living” income, then recover lost revenue through higher rates or surtaxes on upper-middle and high incomes.

The standard deduction is the amount of income you get to subtract before calculating federal income tax. If you are single and earn $50,000, and the standard deduction is $16,100, then only $33,900 is taxable income before other credits or adjustments.

A candidate-to-candidate pledge is basically a private arms-control treaty inside a political race. The candidates agreed that if an outside group spent on their behalf, their campaign would contribute 50% of the outside group’s ad cost to a charity chosen by the opponent.

@thinkbig_pac @AlexBores The arms race will likely end only when the parties, donors, candidates, and voters decide that the current level of spending is wasteful, dangerous, or illegitimate enough to accept restraints.

@thinkbig_pac @AlexBores It is impossible to eliminate money from politics in a society where people can organize, speak, publish, and advocate. The better goal is make money more transparent, less corrupting, less dependent on billionaires, less dominant in primaries, and less necessary to compete.

1/ Alex Bores now has THREE dark money super PACs backing his campaign. These fringe techleaders are spending millions to get their puppet in Albany down to Washington. See who is really backing Bores here...
