I don't think I ever realised life could be as bad as this. My mum had an appallingly hard life but it was just on the cusp of redeeming itself - she was about to come and live with me, Andrzej and the kids in Cambridge. We were about to start something new, weird and incredible.

As a refugee, I have been thinking a lot about the Mo Farah story. The nation seems shocked and in awe of his bravery. We know him, so we are sympathetic to his ordeal. But let’s be real- this is classic British exceptionalism.
