Our new film APOLLO 1 is on the UK's @Channel4 TOMORROW - 7th December at 9:30pm. "If you enjoyed BBC2’s Once upon a Time in Space (still on iPlayer), this one-off doc is along similar lines and equally good. It charts an earlier part of the history of space flight, focusing on the ill-starred Apollo 1 mission — a key stepping stone in Nasa’s race to put men on the Moon." - David Butcher, Radio Times

Posted by a JPLer on LinkedIn: “A dark and stormy day today at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which reluctantly performed its fourth workforce reduction in the past two years. Nearly a quarter of its workforce has been laid off due to the collapse of funding from NASA and the Administration. It’s heart wrenching to see so many dedicated professionals post their farewells to friends and colleagues. What is to become of US space science, once the envy of the world?” #NASA #JPL #DareMightyThings

Just got jumped by a gang of brodernists. They saw me reading Sally Rooney on the train and identified me as a target. “Somebody help me” I shouted, as they forced pages of Mircea Cărtărescu novels into my mouth. They ran off into the night chanting “Schattenfroh, Schattenfroh”

On 12 August 1952, 13 members of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee (JAC) were executed. 72 years since the undeniable tragedy. Read about the work they did to fight anti-semitism and how the Soviet authorities responded to it. The JAC was established in 1942 on the initiative of the Central Committee of the Bolshevik Party to form a favourable to the USSR public opinion in the allied Western countries and to initiate a campaign raising funds for the needs of the Red Army. Largely thanks to the committee's activities during the war years, Jewish communities donated about $45 million to the USSR aid fund. But in November 1948, a secret resolution of the Politburo (Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Soviet Communist Party), signed personally by Stalin, was issued to close the JAC as a centre of anti-Soviet propaganda, which "regularly supplies anti-Soviet information to foreign intelligence agencies". This was the beginning of an unspoken repressive action to destroy the bearers of Jewish culture. The text was made with the help of Memorial Israel and translated by us. Follow the thread to learn more 👇 In the photo: Members of the JAC left to right: Itzik Fefer, Samuel Halkin, Solomon Mikhoels, Ben-Zion Goldberg (non-member visiting from the U.S.), Lina Stern, General Aaron Katz and Peretz Markish

Today I interviewed Neil Clarke, Founder of sci-fi mag @clarkesworld. This is a paying market that is open year-round and does not charge fees. No fees and paying writers is the norm with sci-fi magazines. Why? Because writers not only refuse to pay fees, they collectively BOYCOTT and mock those magazines that charge them. Clarkesworld is sustained entirely through subscriptions & donations. Their staff is paid. Response time is 24-48 hours. Food for thought.

Obviously read bits and pieces through the years, but I'm not joking that almost nothing compares to a linear dive into this whole thing - a bit like sitting through a great Wagner opera, or listening to Sgt. Pepper's for the first time
