thanks for taking the time. I'd like to believe that about Russia but talk to a lot of young Russians and they aren't usually involved with the church. One told me New Years is a bigger celebration than Christmas, at least in Vladivostok. I take it with a grain of salt. I don't think the issues with illegitimately-appointed bishops during the USSR have been dealt with either. A lot of their head bishops are also former KGB. It might be the dissonance between government action and the church that keeps people disinterested. I'm resigned to proselytizing through example. We have to become hot and cool to be persuasive.

i think there are a few things that seem by design to be dialectically opposed to christian tradition, the elevation of actors being the example of an inversion. but, like you said, i likewise wouldn’t go too far with a uniquely negative critique. i think it’s simply the size and scale of our empire being as historic as it is and our techniques being what they are (and maybe our own vanity) where some critics fall into a certain kind of trap. for example, i do think in russia there is something that is closer to christian tradition, but im not going to become a putin apologist, or, without reason, take the side of russia over europe in total, despite some of my personal opinions of the futility of the ukraine war. i understand there are elements in russia that would love to put us under their yoke, correct faith aside. so no i wouldnt blackpill on the West, if thats what you’re saying. especially considering that my critique really, and people that interest me on this site, is that the West is under the influence partially of something foreign, something unWestern, that were it to be exercised, would solve a great deal of our problems. on the orthodox side, i recently spoke to my priest about the zeal of converts, about how in, say serbia, orthodoxy is a way of life, but obviously there are still all kinds of problems, whereas here, with orthodoxy booming, we really have this beautiful opportunity to reap a great reward that frankly we didn’t even sow, just by virtue of becoming aware of it and engaging it. once again, providence graces us, despite us not deserving it. so i do think there is quite the silver lining to the situation we find ourselves in. my apologies for the rant.

btw there is an early church document on catechism going over which professions the inquiry must give up in order to move forward with baptism and one of them is being an actor. the hollywood critique is old and stale but between this and it being well known that for most of history acting was a lowly profession, you can't help but keep walking into more examples of our how our culture is a total inverse of what was always considered rightly ordered and even holy.
