⚪️⚫️ 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗡𝗲𝘄𝗰𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗚𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝟮𝟱/𝟮𝟲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗼𝗻 𝗕𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗼 I recently posted some analysis which shows why I believe Newcastle will need to sell Bruno (or Hall) due to their likely Uefa settlement conditions. Others have strongly challenged this analysis, claiming it is wrong on the basis Newcastle “almost certainly” booked profit on Gordon’s sale in 26/27. They believe that Newcastle had no reason to sell Gordon in 25/26 and in doing so, make it unnecessarily harder for them to comply with the Uefa settlement in 26/27. This is despite Barcelona and Newcastle both explicitly announcing the permanent move, without conditions. Uefa has not yet published Newcastle’s settlement but we can see Villa’s and Chelsea’s from last year (as well as others’). They tend to follow a very similar structure of financial and sporting sanctions. A uniform sporting sanction applied is a restriction on who a club can include in its “List A” for Uefa competitions. This restriction means they have a ceiling on footballing cost (wages and amortisation of fees) for List A players. Normally in the settlements, it unconditionally applies in the first year (not an issue for Newcastle given they’re not in any Uefa competitions in 26/27) but then conditionally applies thereafter. If Newcastle’s settlement has similar terms to Villa’s (see screenshot), it would apply in 27/28 if Newcastle report a Football Earnings (FE) deficit in 25/26. My forecast for Newcastle’s 25/26 Football Earnings before the sale of Gordon was in fact, a €10m deficit. If accurate, that would have meant the sporting sanction applied in 27/28. It’s highly restrictive for recruitment purposes and so, Newcastle would have had very good reason to sell Gordon and bank the needed profit to avoid it. At the time, I also suspect Newcastle did not plan to sell Bruno. My hypothesis is at the time they sold Gordon in late May, they intended to sell Tonali and Livramento both for hefty profit in 26/27. But then Livramento was injured mid-June and that has put them in a difficult position. Again, if their Uefa settlement follows the structure and standard terms of others, they will have to avoid making an FE deficit of €80m in 26/27 or they will breach and receive a 1-year Uefa ban. Anything over €60m will likely result in more fines too. As they continue to spend, they come closer and closer to this limit. And when you consider that this limit then needs to extend across multiple seasons the year after, it becomes clear that they’ll have to raise plenty more profit, with fewer and fewer players who can help them achieve this (Hall plus Bruno who will fetch more this summer than next). As such, I don’t see them being in a position to secure a high price for Bruno unless someone else comes in with a better offer (for Bruno or Hall).
