NUFC usually set a clear valuation for a player, make it known, and then allow interested clubs to come forward. I actually think that’s the right approach. Keeping the price tag open and quoting different fees depending on who asks about the player just doesn’t sit right with me. If Newcastle value Tonali at around £100m, it’s a believable figure although I still think it’s slightly exaggerated. For me, a fee in the region of £80m should be enough to get that deal done. Sometimes I wonder whether, as fans, we should even be too concerned about transfer fees, or if we should focus more on the actual quality of the player. That said, I still believe a player’s price should ultimately be determined by two things: quality and timing.
