🚨Salt Lake City leaks 4 Billion Gallons of Water
Salt Lake City reported a 2023 leak rate of 13.80% to the Division of Water Rights. In 2023, Salt Lake City leaked 3.8 Billion gallons. Salt Lake City leaks more water than some cities actually use.
Why? Old water lines. You see, Salt Lake City loots $10 million a year from Public Utility to its General Fund. It has no water line replacement standards nor does the State. For example, Salt Lake City's 1,326 miles of water lines have some lines 110 years old.
In 2020, SLC reported that over a 10 year period an average 5.2 miles of water was replaced. At 5.2 miles per year over 1,326 miles is a replacement rate of every 255 years.
Recently, Salt Lake City hides how many feet of water line it replaces, because the number is so small and leads to water line replacement rates of 255+ years.
Basically, Salt Lake City hides its utility looting and water leakage negligence. This problem is not unique to Salt Lake City. Utah has no state codes for water line replacements for cities. Utah's water grid is in poor condition because cities loot their utilities, and hide water line replacement, and Utah has no state water line replacement codes for cities.

🚨Utah's No. 1 Water Hoarding City is Salt Lake City. Salt Lake City hoards an amount of water equal to 5 Deer Creeks (500,000 acre-feet – 163 Billion Gallons.) SLC's 2024 reported metered water sales was 78,000 acre-feet (25.4 Billion gallons). 40,000 acre-feet was residential with 2/3 for outdoor water (26,640 acre-feet for lawns.) The State granted sewer reuse water rights to all cities, because indoor water is 99% return flow. If SLC utilized its sewer effluent wisely, its total metered wet water demand would drop to 51,000 acre-feet. Salt Lake City owns 61,700 of stored water in Deer Creek. It does not need the canyon water and not 273,000 acre-feet of well water it hoards. 🚩The State Engineer needs to crack down on water hoarding cities, end its water war against farmers consuming 3% of Utah's water.
