I wonder why systemd’s answer was not to invite those who need anything related to age verification to create their own fork that complies with all requirements and leave upstream as it is.

It's been very fun to watch all the mommy's freedom fighters having all these excuses why they have no choice but to add age verification to free and open source software. Same exact people who were "overthrow your military dictatorship tomorrow or you're subhuman". If there's one lesson you should learn from someone who spent a lot of effort to escape oppressive regime - every bit of freedom and control you give up will eventually be used to fuck you up. Why are Japanese manual laborers and low wage workers so competent? As Bryan Caplan points out, they’re massively overqualified! The lack of immigration means natives work worse jobs. The world works in the exact opposite way nativists think.
