Lauren Edwards told @LabourList that being from Victoria, Australia gives her confidence to force into law the failed unsafe assisted dying Bill. But Victoria’s Act contains safeguards absent from her Bill - safeguards she will ask MPs to vote down: 1. Core principles in statute: every human life has equal value; people should receive quality care to minimise suffering and maximise quality of life; choices must be genuine; vulnerable people must be protected from abuse. 2. Doctors must not initiate or suggest assisted death. 3. Suffering must be incapable of being relieved. 4. Doctors must have at least 5 years’ experience. 5. Doctor must have relevant expertise in the person’s illness/condition. 6. Explicit attention to mental illness - psychiatric referral is required where mental illness may affect capacity. 7. The patient must be warned of the risks of taking the lethal substance. 8. Witnesses cannot own/run the facility where the person is treated or lives, nor provide them with health/professional care services. 9. A detailed statutory regime governs supply, handling and return of the lethal substance. 10. Interpreters must be adults, should be accredited, independent, not family, not beneficiaries, and not working at the care / health facility. If Victoria gives her confidence, why is her Bill weaker than Victoria?

@nmdacosta Pretty much the same game plan as last time. Send the bill to the Lords, push it through the truncated procedure, reject al safeguards, then pretend it's a democratic affront when the Lords do what the proposers told the commons they would allow the Lords to do.

Utterly fed up with this lie, promoted by campaigners since the start. In 2024 a lot of MPs were brand new but they've seen dozens and dozens of bills since then. There is no excuse for this utter misleading tosh, and it takes other MPs for fools.
Nikki da Costa@nmdacosta

🤬🤬Lauren Edwards misleads Press Association: "we (MPs) will have the opportunity to have a final vote on [the Bill] in the usual way once it returns from the Lords.” MPs do NOT get to vote on ANY Bill as a whole that returns from the Lords, only specific amendments.

@CookJosh90395 Do grow-up. Not one single penny. Given Dignity in Dying is completely opaque on their high net worth donors and can fund ads in Westminster which only the likes of BAE can usually afford, I don't think it's me you should be concerned about. x.com/nmdacosta/stat…
Nikki da Costa@nmdacosta

@JasonD60 Not a single penny, nor is it needed. It's the right thing to do - it's an appalling bill, pushed in the most appalling reckless manner. I may be knackered fighting it but I'll continue to fight. P.S. Paul Brand tried this already. What about you? x.com/nmdacosta/stat…

Yesterday, some hard truths for hardcore Assisted Dying campaigners from both the Government and supporters. 1. An MP in the ballot picking up this Bill, has very little chance of success. They'd be wasting their slot...1/

@sophieRblake @catholicEW Thing is tho Sophie this bill doesn’t legislate for that. It says nothing about palliative care and whether or not it can reasonably be expected to help a person. It says nothing about suffering. All it says is a Dr says you have less than 6 mths and you say you want it.

Note for watchers of the Assisted Dying Bill, round 2: an odd error seems to have crept into the lines from supporters. They've started saying only "mentally competent" people would be eligible- but that phrase doesn't appear anywhere in the Bill; it's an American legal concept.>

@AshleyDalton_MP @sophieRblake @catholicEW You need to actually read the bill instead of making up lies. You really show a lack of comprehension thats worrying. Mentally compentant terminally ill adults its not hard those terms are enshrined and have been in UK law for ages.

I'm struck that just as Lauren Edwards had agency in choosing her Bill, Labour MPs also have agency. They don't have to be dragged along for the ride, forced into three months of bitter division over an unsafe Bill. Suspect we will see more speak out this week.
Nikki da Costa@nmdacosta

"Should Burnham return to Westminster as MP for Makerfield on Friday (and later prime minister) it is hard to see a world in which he would welcome this Labour Party-dividing legislation. He will strive to bring competing factions together, not set them to war".

Here we go again... rather than working to ensure a 'good death' for all by funding end of life care, yet another misguided MP is pushing for assisted suicide Thankfully my @BBCOne documentary explaining mine & others opposition is still on @BBCiPlayer bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episod…

@TonyMarra_1 Of course individuals have their own view but by and large medics are more interested in saving lives rather than murdering their patients. That’s what they sign up for. Why should they have this dumped on them?

The response to Lauren Edwards’ decision to bring back assisted suicide is incredibly revealing. The entire Labour Party is being criticised over this, even though it is one MP’s decision. Completely the wrong thing for a Labour MP to do at a time of crisis.

I can only assume you think it will *blow our minds* that some people want to kill themselves, and that it's understandable. I'm aware of this fact. We all are. It's not news. It's a lazy contribution. Warranting only a Partridge, at best. What we all need to know is: * how will the depressed person be protected? * how will the disabled person be protected? * how will the lonely person be protected? * how will the eating disordered person be protected? * how will a victim of emotional manipulation be protected? * how will patients of unscrupulous doctors be protected? * how will palliative care itself survive if hospices cannot opt out? * where will all these medical and funding resources come from? * how will we ensure NHS patients do not come to fear going to hospital as a gateway to being bumped off? * how will Secretaries of State use the discretionary powers this Bill gifts to them? * how will statute resist extension by discrimination caselaw to wider and wider categories of people? * will private businesses be free to make profits from suicide? * will private businesses be free to advertise suicide? * what will happen to people who want to stick around when these end-of-life norms have changed? If it's words you want to exchange, let's have some.
