To bring back the same inadequate bill - having done nothing to meet Royal College concerns - knowing Lord Falconer has tabled 73 amendments to make it workable, and say this should be Parliament Acted (without them) would be a bold move.

Under the government's proposals, not one of the 900 wrongly convicted subpostmasters would have had a right to trial by jury. The Prime Minister himself concluded in a report that the scrapping of jury trials led to miscarriages of justice in Northern Ireland in the 1990s. The right to trial by jury must be protected. #JusticeNeedsJuries

The hereditaries are again trooping through the lobbies, making small but important improvements to the Pension Schemes Bill. Almost all of them were here until after midnight last night voting dutifully on the Crime Bill. They have all been served notice. Yet they are working to the last minute, putting the rest of us to shame.

@BidC1 The Bill as a whole does not go back to the Commons. Any changes the Lords makes goes to the Commons and on those specific changes there is ping-pong as the two Houses try to agree the final form. But on abortion those issues cannot now be re-opened.

Tragically for the baby in the womb, by 185 votes to 148 votes, @UKHouseofLords rejected @MoncktonR Baroness Monckton's, amendment to overturn the new extreme clause allowing self administered home abortions up to birth. Peers also rejected by 191 votes to 119 votes Baroness Stroud's amendment to reinstate in-person consultations with a medical professional, prior to an abortion taking place at home. So, a bad day for vulnerable women, a bad day for the unborn child, a bad day for medical ethics and a bad day for the sanctity of human life. Nevertheless, both in @UKParliament , and in public polling, people have been reassessing and rejecting laws that have led to the ending of one UK life every two minutes -300,000 every year. In 1967, when abortion was made legal, just 29 MPs voted pro life- so, opposition has grown. But, bad laws will only change when the public push the right to life up the political agenda.

30 organisations representing victims of violence against women and girls have written to the Justice Secretary urging him against curtailing the right to jury trials. The letter says they are “deeply concerned that the curtailment of jury trials risks unfair outcomes that undermine justice for everyone... "To position the rights and interests of survivors as directly opposed to those of defendants oversimplifies the reality of how our criminal justice system treats women and survivors on all sides of our adversarial model." It's not too late for the government to listen to the thousands of voices of victims, judges, barristers, other legal professionals and academics who oppose this unnecessary proposal and stop before bulldozing our jury system. #JusticeNeedsJuries bit.ly/4uzLSQn
