Here's something you never think about. The story of the #zipper. youtu.be/9szhjhO9epA?si… #engineering @veritasium

If they find Planet 9 and don't name it Urectum, I'll lose all respect for #astronomy.
English

I just read a horrible article about overrated 70s bands, slamming Steely Dan, ELO, Jethro Tull, and the Alan Parsons Project. One funny line, though: "'Eye in the Sky' was a hit? This is the kind of #music that is played in a doctor's office when people are having teeth pulled."
English

@JackFlynn810 @WilliamShatner Insurance went up, but fortunately not enough to offset the energy savings. I was looking at Nissans when I bought. The Model 3 is equivalent to a loaded Maxima, and it was actually cheaper than the loaded Maxima, but not everyone can afford that. There are no cheap Teslas.
English

@GSLLC @WilliamShatner I don’t care if people drive EVs. I almost bought a Tesla for local driving. But the cost of the vehicle and the insurance was too steep. The insurance company said I would pay a premium because it was an EV.
Whatever works man.
English

And for the #teslarites who don’t understand 500 miles. Time is money. How long does it take to pump a tank of gas? 4-5 mins versus 30. Early last week I went up to the Yosemite area (about 300 miles.) I got up there, did my thing and got gas (5 mins) and drove back. With a Tesla. It would be drive up (maybe on one charge) charge up 20-30 mins, do my thing. Drive back, stop along the way to recharge (again probably another 20 mins…) That’s too long. 500 would be one recharge so it’s 10 mins gas versus 29-30 mins which I would consider.🤷🏼
English

@JackFlynn810 @WilliamShatner Temp also affects charging time, not charge charge drain. In cold weather, charging times increase a little bit. I just find it funny that some people get angry about it. When I charged in Weston, a guy confronted me while I was charging. Seriously. It killed the time, though. 😀
English

You have a medium range vehicle, which of course also depends on temp. I have a long range vehicle.
When I travel with my family, I have no desire to stop 3 times and add 1.5 hours to my trip.
Maybe that’s your cup of tea. But it is not a 1:1 comparison.
I also drive a 7 seat ford with a roof carrier.
You can’t match that with an EV.
Different strokes, or engines in this case, for different folks.
English

@JackFlynn810 @WilliamShatner That's true. He was making the "time is money" argument. Your and my circumstances are different, at least until there are a lot more chargers built. But for most people, the fear is unfounded. It comes down to preference more than need.
English

@GSLLC @WilliamShatner Cool, I don’t want to wait 30 min for lunch. I want to get in the car and go.
So if you have time for a nice break, knock yourself out.
I don’t. And that was his point as well.
English

@AbbyNormal1976 @Incubatedideas @WilliamShatner Sure, but you're assuming that EV infrastructure won't improve dramatically and quickly. It will, making that aspect of your argument irrelevant. But yeah, if I can't time my long-distance charging needs with a lunch or dinner break, then I'll be watching Hulu for 30 minutes. :-)
English

@Incubatedideas @GSLLC @WilliamShatner Agreed, gas and diesel is splash n go and available most everywhere. With an EV it controls where you go and how long you're going to be there.
English

@JackFlynn810 @WilliamShatner Okay, here's (3/3). I'm looking at the complete list of public charging I've ever done. 15 times since 9/2023. Even charging publicly, we're looking at <$10 except for those two stops in Weston, WV, which were both $17.86. (Weird that the amounts were identical.)
English

How many miles can you get before you have to pull off to charge? And once there, how long does it take to charge before you are back on the road.
I get about 425 miles per tank and it takes me 4 min to fill my tank and I’m back on to the next 425 miles. So in 900 miles, I spend about 9 min getting gas.
How long do you wait? And I’m not talking about driving to CVS and plugging it in. I’m talking you have a 1,000 mile trip.
English

@JackFlynn810 @WilliamShatner Irrelevant for me. I never drive 425 miles before returning home. But to answer your questions, I average about 340 miles, with 370 miles being doable. When I drove from DC to Charleston, WV (311 miles), I stopped once each way with a third charge at the destination. (1/2)
English

@Incubatedideas @WilliamShatner That seems like an odd way to live life to the fullest :-) , but seriously, you do you. If you *never* have to wait at a pump (hard to predict if driving a lot), and you drive on long trips rather than fly, then ICE is the way to go (at least until EV infrastructure catches up).
English

That is kind of the point, often it is the journey, not the destination. I also leave the house without my phone and I like to fly by the seat of my pants. At this point in my life I make every trip an adventure, no matter how mundane, and sometimes you just want to make 'a left turn at Albuquerque'.
English

@JackFlynn810 @WilliamShatner 3 seconds a day. I just walk to the rear of the car and plug it in. Then I walk away. There are never lines to the socket in my garage. If I were driving 67 miles per day, none of this would change at all.
Stone Ridge, VA 🇺🇸 English

@GSLLC @WilliamShatner I put on 2000 miles a month and fill up about 4 times at about 4 min a fill.
How long does it take you to charge your vehicle to make it 2,000 miles?
English

@Incubatedideas @WilliamShatner Planning your path is as simple as plugging your destination into GPS. Tesla does the actual work.
Stone Ridge, VA 🇺🇸 English

@WilliamShatner EV are great for people with rigid lives. If you are spontaneous or need to roll at a moments notice, EV alone is not the right ride.
Worst part, is how people have to go out of their way planning their path on how they will recharge their cars on trips.
English

@Chopstyx13 @WilliamShatner That's a function of the fact that EVs are new, so they're playing catch up with infrastructure. It has nothing to do with the technology itself. Besides, I've charged publicly only 15 times since 9/2023, and "planning" my charging is as simple giving my destination to GPS.
Stone Ridge, VA 🇺🇸 English

@WilliamShatner And that's with a Tesla. Most people can't afford a Tesla, so would be restricted to cheaper EVs, with even less range. In EVs you have to plan your trip around charging. In my car, I don't have to plan. I just go.
English

@WilliamShatner Put another way, since I bought my Tesla in September, 2023, I've used public chargers only 15 times, the last one (August) being unnecessary. I go home, plug in, and by the time I drive again, I'm at 80%. How much time have you spent at gas stations in the last 2-1/2 years?
Stone Ridge, VA 🇺🇸 English

@WilliamShatner Thr bottom line is this: I spend far less time at the charging station than I used to spend at the gas station. Your concern is based on vacations. Because I don't drive my car on my vacations, I can say that I almost never use charging stations. I go home, plug in, and I'm done.
English

@JackFlynn810 @WilliamShatner I've used a public charger 15 times since I bought my Tesla in September 2023 (my charging history is readily available, so that's exact). Most days, I go home, plug in, and I'm good to go, and paying less. How much time have you spent at gas stations in the past 2-1/2 years?
Stone Ridge, VA 🇺🇸 English

@WilliamShatner Don’t let anyone fool you into buying one of these under the guise it is a time saver.
I put 90 gallons of diesel in a U-Haul last week in a tenth of the time it takes to charge a Tesla.
