It's no secret that global energy systems need vast amounts of #storage to maximise renewable energy to achieve full #decarbonization. At #COP29, countries and regions announced the Global Energy Storage and Grid Pledge to increase global energy storage capacity six times above 2022 levels, bringing the target to 1500GW by 2030, alongside increased grid capacity targets. This is the first time that the Conference of the Parties (COP) has brought clean flexibility on to the agenda - growing recognition that without #storage and grid upgrades our climate pledges simply aren't achievable. Exciting News… we’re proud to announce that Highview Power will develop four new 2.5GWh power plants, to deliver 10GWh of long duration energy storage across the UK by 2030. Two of the 2.5GWh plants will deliver more storage than all of the UK’s existing battery storage, using 100% sustainable technology, with a 40-year lifespan. We are thrilled to announce the next phase of our Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) programme with the launch of a 2.5GWh liquid air energy storage (LAES) plant at Hunterston, Ayrshire. The facility will significantly enhance Scotland's energy storage capabilities, delivering five times the country’s current operational battery storage capacity, and play a critical role in stabilising the grid, advancing Scotland's renewable energy production. “Batteries clearly have their place in the two-four-hour storage market but can’t provide the sort of longer-duration storage as well as the grid-stability services that large industrial customers demand.” Highview Power CEO, Richard Butland. Richard recently spoke to Angela Macdonald-Smith from the The Australian Financial Review on the key role Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES) has to play in Australia. Liquid air is amongst the emerging technologies which are not yet deployed in Australia - as they make efforts to overcome the “droughts” in generation that plague supply and affordability in winter, when the wind does not blow, and the sun does not shine. “Highview’s process uses excess energy to cryogenically liquefy and store ambient air in the tanks. When the energy is needed the liquefied air is reheated and run through a steam turbine to return the power to the grid. Once complete, it will have a storage capacity of 300 MWh and an output power of 50 MW per hour for six hours. Construction will begin on the site immediately, with the facility operational in 2026, supporting over 700 jobs in construction and the supply chain. .@Orsted and Highview Power pursue liquid air energy storage to unlock greater value from wind farms We have collaborated to investigate how combining Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES) and offshore wind could unlock greater value for investors and consumers; carrying out in-depth analysis of technical performance, route to planning approval and route to market with a rigorous regulatory and economic assessment. The results show that there is value to combining offshore wind with LAES to support reducing wind curtailment, increasing productivity, and helping the move to a more flexible, resilient zero carbon grid. This collaboration comes at a critical moment for the UK – offshore wind will be essential for the UK’s ambition to achieve net zero by 2050.
