@RepBillFoster Thank you. The U.S. research ecosystem, built over the years since World War II, is in danger. It has powered the preeminence of American science and engineering and led to so many discoveries and advances that have improved our lives. We need to keep it strong.

NEWS: I just led 112 of my colleagues in demanding answers from the Trump Administration on their funding freeze of the National Science Foundation. Cutting off NSF funding threatens vital research, stalls innovation, and risks ceding global scientific leadership to China.

Trump is using the power of the US government to intimidate individual companies, universities, and citizens. Intimidation and a disregard for due process are grave dangers to our democracy and its institutions. This puts sectors of society into a collective action problem where each organization calculates that it's better (in the short run) to submit to the intimidation. This creates a trap that will continue, unless more people and organizations in each sector of civil society stand up to say no. We won't always agree with the people and organizations we stand up for. But as a social psychologist who studies collective action problems, I believe it's important that we laud those doing the brave thing, which makes it easier for others to also be brave. So, bravo Harvard. Bravo to the law firms that are saying no to intimidation. And thank you David Brooks: nytimes.com/2025/04/17/opi…
