Met a vacationing Pakistani family on Badaling who were incredibly impressed by the extremely limited amount of Urdu I had memorized for this very specific type of occasion.

@left_plain Beware of chin-related injuries from umbrellas!
English

@left_plain Also if you are 185cm like me there is a genuine danger for your eyes with the amount of umbrellas at the top. I kept getting poked in or near the eye because all the aunties holding their humongous umbrellas were perfectly at eye-level with me.
English

@left_plain Went to Badaling this time around (visited Jiankou yesterday with a buddy). Nice part about Badaling having gondola lifts + buses everywhere is that it's surprisingly sparse, comparatively speaking, most of the way if you opt to walk up. Still gets super crowded at the top tho.

@DaddyFa82557590 Of course, the caveat here is that the paint on that Sui statue has totally worn off, so we have no idea if it had additional representations of mechanisms painted on or not.
English

@left_plain @bodenlosig Wonder if he ever read Kojeve or vice-versa.
English

@MayoMainz @bodenlosig he's just kind of like a lib hegelian, very proto Fukuyama lol. so his complaint is w a society that transforms culture as a sort of lived project/civilizational enterprise into mindless maxims. he thinks chengyu are bad for this reason too; portable pre-thought ideas.
English

@DaddyFa82557590 My guess is either this (I recall seeing some 6th or 7th century Germanic helmets like this, though I can't find a photo anymore), or a soft fabric chinstrip/liner for the lamellar aventail.
English

@left_plain @bodenlosig Didn't this kind of loop back around into a nativism since Hu attributed the stagnant aspects of Chinese tradition to secularized and domesticated elements of Indian culture/Buddhism?
Admittedly, haven't really engaged with Hu at all, outside some essays written about him.
English

@MayoMainz @bodenlosig this was a rare woke, cosmopolitan take from him I think. he has an essay on golden ages/cultural influence where he's like "the best we ever were was when we were the least Chinese" about how being the nexus of various cultural influences is good and its own form of glory

@left_plain @bodenlosig When you're trying to retake the Mainland from the Commie bandits but the weirdo professor you used to censor keeps yapping about sum "Indian colonization of China"

@MayoMainz @bodenlosig yesterday I got a nice long lecture about Hu Shih, to me one of the most obnoxious figures of all time
English

@bodenlosig @left_plain Occasionally unavoidable cutscene for me because of what I'm studying lol
"So what are you taking in university?"
"Oh right now I'm learning Manchu and--"
"Manchu?? Let me tell you something about those Manchus..."
English

@left_plain @MayoMainz lmao maybe I need to be asking more people what they think of her. I’m afraid of poking the bear of Manchu hate
English

@bodenlosig He was lionposting about Cixi it was kind of nuts. "She would sacrifice 10 plumblossomillion Boxers if it meant defeating the 8 nation alliance" type shit.
