@MrMac_Math @gorge_lilley @teachthemx3 I think this is where project based learning is helpful. The skills become relevant when applied to the project. Ideally these would be projects chosen by the students that are relevant to something they want to know or accomplish.

"When am I ever going to use this?" is the most honest feedback a student can give you. And we dismiss it every time.

@ImColbyLyons @teachthemx3 Yes, a big one for me is financial literacy. I’m also not a qualified financial advisor or insured against bad financial advise, so gotta be careful 😅

@gorge_lilley @teachthemx3 @ImColbyLyons Fair. I do do this sometimes (yr13 stats is a classic example), but I also generally completely ignore most questions about ‘when will I ever use this?’.

@MrMac_Math @teachthemx3 @ImColbyLyons Yes, my context is very different. I’m just saying that even a small effort to show the relevance of obscure maths concepts helps. It’s not 30 different contexts — more like 2 or 3 — so it’s not as unmanageable as you make it out to be.

@ImColbyLyons @teachthemx3 Similar in Uk. I think there is essential knowledge that participants in society must share, and committees of experts are probably the best way to figure out what this is. Due public scrutiny and continuous refinement are part of this process.

@MrMac_Math @teachthemx3 Is a curriculum really designed and determined by society, or individuals and committees? Maybe it works differently in Britain, but in the States it's by committees who wouldn't know what a kid they have never met would need to know.

@gorge_lilley @teachthemx3 @ImColbyLyons Is it possible to make every subject in the maths curriculum relevant to the personal lives of 30 students? Even if it’s possible, is it feasible and efficient as a consistent teaching strategy. My experience is that it’s not necessary. But your context maybe different.

@MrMac_Math @teachthemx3 @ImColbyLyons Sorry Will, that’s never worked for me in schools where kids are forced to do maths. U have to spend time on why it matters. I’ve spent 10 years in a school with building, plumbing & electrical apprenticeships — amazing how fast students pick up Pythagoras when it’s relevant.

@ImColbyLyons @teachthemx3 Also, many kids know that this nuance is almost impossible to explain well to a class, so they will ask knowing that if the teacher bites it will derail the lesson and they can slack off. It’s pragmatic to avoid such questions generally if the lesson is going to be meaningful.

@ImColbyLyons @teachthemx3 The curriculum is an ongoing contested debate, and rightly so. However the current curriculum is societies best yet agreed knowledge base. As a British curriculum teacher I have a lot of faith in the wisdom of what I teach.

@dylanwiliam @adamboxer1 I’d suggest that some frameworks an interventions are so well defined that they are easier to implement well. Consider the evergreen di vs inquiry debate. Both can be ‘done well’, but one is far easier to implement with fidelity at scale.

@adamboxer1 The real danger of "when done well" is that many educational interventions require considerable teacher skill to do well, so looking only at the results of those teachers is cherry-picking the data. It looks like an intervention effect, but it's really a teacher quality effect.

Is there any educational strategy that works "when done badly"? I suspect not. But if that's the case, why do people keep saying "when done well..." to defend strategies that aren't working?
Adam Boxer@adamboxer1

There are a few phrases in education that I really have a problem with. One is "when done well..." This relativistic and unfalsifiable claim is applied to all sorts of pedagogical interventions, but it hampers criticality and growth. Link in reply, please share if you can!

@greg_ashman I’m getting close to viva stage of my thesis. It’s been an RCT, going against the orthodoxy of my course. I know im going to have to defend my philosophy against sceptics. Any tips for dealing with this?
