@SpaceArchivist_ The first column seems to mostly be driven by Orion being horribly overweight, and the communication occultation can be fixed by LunaNet. If the goal is a lunar waystation Low Lunar Orbit is best IMO.

reminder that NRHO is actually a really useful orbit! and it's very useful to have a station there as a staging point!

@cyber_koi The original claim was that Starship would never get to orbit. I think it’s an open question whether full reusability at the pace and cost SpaceX is hoping for is possible, but to claim that Starship (even a re-usable one) will never get to orbit is silly.

@TiredCorsican @jpow_pow Radiation isn’t as big of a showstopper as people say it is for interplanetary travel. And it becomes even less of an issue when you have a large amount of mass and/or energy at your disposal

@jpow_pow No matter how advanced we become, that won’t affect the danger. Radiations don’t suddenly become bearable because we can make fusion rocket, or something, and space distances won’t stop being a challenge.

How can I say politely that the idea of colonizing the Solar System balances between « Highly Improbable » and « Fucking Suicide » ?

@VTXtruder @POTFES Not really. Perchlorates are found on Earth too so we know how to get rid of them (washing with water and UV). Hydroponics would still make more sense though, absent orbital mirrors or similar

@POTFES The dirt on Mars is loaded with perchlorates. Removing those would be such a bitch. Hydroponics and mushroom farming would make more sense.

@LevLime @otherside_X42 This mission needs to be much more successful than that for the timeline for Artemis+everything else to not be ruined. Starship *needs* to be operational by mid 2026 or things start getting difficult.

@otherside_X42 They CAN'T loose the booster, it needs to survive at least 30 seconds. I think it will survive, and I hope for successful boost back burn after that its 50/50 I think

@SpaceArchivist_ @deltaIV9250 How exactly would Gateway, with its expensive orbit and minimal scientific purpose, have served as a launching off point for the solar system?

@deltaIV9250 I think you’ve misunderstood Artemis at a programmatic level. It was always about being flexible and unlocking the whole of deep space, with surface as one vector of that. Gateway was the launching off point for the whole solar system

@stellachenyl @TheXMatriarch I think this idea of a woman needing to be attracted to her husband or in the mood is what’s killing it. She needs to understand that it’s her duty to sexually please her husband and she should find a way to get it done.

Yes, I keep trying to explain this to people: it can’t actually be a real, major problem AND fake vaporware. It has to be one or the other. And I think it is a real, major problem.

on the Left (and elsewhere) AI is considered both a horrible evil that should not be touched, but it's also said to be pointless and stupid and will probably go away soon anyway. which is a sign something very ideological, self deceiving and significant is happening

@mikebeckhamsm As scarcity has decreased over human history (for instance starvation-level food scarcity is almost non existent in the developed world), while the amount of competition may have stayed constant or increased, quality of life has gone up across the board.

Some people are claiming technology will lead to a post scarcity society. That's the kind of idea that only someone who doesn't understand human nature could ever believe. Humans are mimetic and status seeking. They will always pursue things that are relatively rare to signal their status to others. I don't know what those particular things will be in the future. But I know there will always be things that are in very high demand precisely because they are scarce. Technology might be able to bring us robots and collapse the cost of many consumer products. But it won't change our underlying nature and desires.
YIMBYLAND@YIMBYLAND

In a post-labor AGI world, who decides who gets to live on Central Park, Pacific Heights, or Beverly Hills? There is a fixed supply of the nicest neighborhoods and locations. How does a supposedly post-scarcity world where nobody earns an income deal with this?

@bedouincap Welfare will probably be the solution to this problem. Corporations will demand welfare be given more broadly such to prop up consumer spending, creating a completely bullshit consumerist loop of spending and taxation .

The thing about the Citrini piece that is internally inconsistent is: where does all the surplus go? Ok we all become impoverished and aggregate demand collapses. What financial asset is spared from that?

@Packagingbook23 @XH_Lee23 And while this is true, it’s also something that’s being rapidly offset by battery + other forms of electric storage that let solar power be used later in the day. Even with battery storage for somewhere around a day of storage, solar is already competitive cost-wise

@Packagingbook23 @XH_Lee23 You don’t need to pretend, it’s just a meaningless point. You will never need to run a coal power plant at 100% capacity (nor can you due to fuel loading and maintenance), because people do not need 100% capacity at all hours of the day. Most energy demand is in the day.

Few plants actually run 100% they keep some in reserve. But a 1gw coal plant has 1gw of actual capacity because it can run continuously at 1gw for weeks, months, perhaps years. 1gw of solar can never run over abt 20% except for short bursts. Hours max. Pretending otherwise is is a lie

@Packagingbook23 @XH_Lee23 Almost every source of energy is subsidized in some way. Whether that be due to energy stability, serving stakeholders (farmers for instance) or otherwise. For new industries (e.g solar), that subsidy is what brings it up the learning curve, bringing down prices long-term

If solar is the cheapest option before subsidy, why is there a subsidy? Solar cost Puerto Rico is 17-22c/kwh Coal is 4-7c/kwh (6.51 right now) NG combined cycle is 7/11c/kwh (8.2 now) Wind See prices in real time here scroll down click "ver data" for each plant genera-pr.com/data-generacion
