Then came v4 (2025), and this is where things get exciting. Hooks let anyone write smart contracts that modify pool behavior (before swaps, after swaps, on liquidity changes) without forking a single line of Uniswap's core code. As @TomWade puts it: "This allows anyone effectively to create derivative decentralized exchanges on Uniswap without needing to fork entire codebases. As a builder, it really supercharges us, gives us all of these extra layers of functionality that we never had before." Add in flash accounting, a singleton architecture, native ETH support, and ERC6909, and the gas savings alone are massive.

We just walked through the entire history of @Uniswap with UHI instructor @TomWade v1 (2018): ETH ↔ ERC20 only. One formula: x × y = k. Simple, but it kicked off the DEX era. v2 (2020): ERC20 ↔ ERC20 pairs, flash swaps, and TWAP oracles, giving smart contracts a way to get pricing without getting sandwiched. 🚨 V4 Swap Router by z0r0z has been hacked for 42k USDC It seems like the vulnerability was in this assembly block. Where an attacker passed a valid calldata that allowed him to drain the victims wallet that had approved the router.

🚨 V4 Swap Router by z0r0z - Loss $42.6K (2026-03-03) Type: ABI Encoding / Authorization Bypass The swap(bytes,uint256) function in UniswapV4Router04 uses inline assembly with a hardcoded calldata offset (calldataload(164)) to verify that the payer in the swap data equals msg.sender. This assumes standard ABI encoding where the bytes parameter offset is always 0x40. An attacker crafted non-standard (but valid) ABI-encoded calldata with the bytes offset set to 0xc0, placing their own address at position 164 to pass the authorization check, while the actual decoded bytes data contained the victim's address as the payer. This allowed the attacker to drain 42,607 USDC from a victim wallet (an EIP-7702 delegated EOA) that had approved the router, swapping it for 21.2 ETH via Uniswap V4's ETH/USDC pool.
