@Samstricko181 I like a lot of what you do Sam but I think the idea that some or any SEND children are helpless is really damaging and at best a really poor choice of wording.

A huge issue with clumping children with SEND together under one broad brushstroke banner, i.e. SEND, is that it’s really quite clumsy and risks creating self fulfilling prophecies. Labels risk doing more harm than good. So many SEND children are highly capable & not helpless.

I am pleased to report that, working with our bus operators and @unitetheunion, bus strikes planned over the coming days have been called off.
Most bus services will now run as normal this weekend.

One of the key goals at @OfficialOAFC is to encourage more people from the local area to engage with the club. Turning ‘Latics’ from a matchday experience to an every day engagement. A vital element to that is working closely with the education landscape across the borough. So #NationalTeacherDay, not only allowed us to show our appreciation for the great work of teachers and educators across Oldham but to build relations with them as well. Thanks to the support of Chances Mentoring and @ipldab we were able to give out over 1500 tickets to teachers who applied for them to yesterday’s game. Taking our match day attendance in the 5th division of English football to over 7000!💥 Not only that, we held a networking event for a number of senior leaders in education, including Director of Education & Skills at @OldhamCouncil, Matt Bulmer. It was exciting to talk to a number of those in attendance about our plans to become a key part of the education jigsaw in Oldham and not just a supporter of it. This is growing on the already fantastic work being delivered by @OfficialOACT , working in almost 30 schools and engaging with many more across the town. It was brilliant to have Martin & Emily in attendance yesterday with a collaborative approach with Club & Trust. Whilst the result on the pitch wasn’t what we was hoping for, off the pitch we will take a win planting the seeds to grow new relations across the education landscape. I entered the UK with no school certificate but an immigration stamp...
More than 20 years ago, I arrived in the UK as a teenager with no family support, not much formal education, and only $100.
I started studying English and then A-levels at Colleges. When I asked a tutor to help me with Cambridge University interview, he said:
"You are an Afghan refugee, not white, and not privately educated to go to Cambridge."
A few years later...
Studying at Cambridge and Harvard, I achieved my dream of becoming an NHS doctor and founder of a global humanitarian non-profit Teleheal, and also an innovative mental health service Arian Wellbeing to help everyone in need including hard to reach populations.
It's a lifetime of hardships and rejections that have taught me most in life.
Many young people's dreams have been ended by their school grades today.
My message to them or anyone else is - don't let grades or other people's opinions define who you are. Always believe in yourself and your dreams.
Please consider sharing this message with anyone who might need to hear this today.
