Just concluded a productive High-Level Round Table Discussion in Konya, Türkiye, focused on “Improving Agricultural Productivity under Water-Scarce Conditions through South-South and Triangular Cooperation.”
It was an honor to join esteemed leaders, experts, and partners in sharing strategies and innovations that address one of the most pressing challenges of our time: doing more with less water.
The ministry has an ambitious plan of putting over 1.3M acres of land under irrigation under MTP IV with a keen interest in smallholder farmers participation in irrigation development. For this reason, the Ministry recently launched the National Irrigation Sector Investment Plan. In my adress, I focused on two critical pathways; revitalizing community irrigation schemes and farmer led irrigation development, which when enhanced will boost agricultural productivity and climate resilience.
South-South and Triangular Cooperation remains a powerful platform to exchange knowledge, build partnerships, and drive sustainable solutions tailored to our unique regional contexts. I look forward to continuing these collaborations to ensure resilient, efficient, and inclusive agricultural systems. I called on IFAD and other development partners to walk with us in bridging development gaps in the water and irrigation sector.

Accompanied by Joel Tanui, Secretary of Land Reclamation, Climate Resilience, and Irrigation Water Management, we are attending a High-Level Dialogue Meeting on Improving Agricultural Productivity under Scarce Water Resources through South-South and Triangular Cooperation in Konya, Turkey. Kenya’s participation in this key forum underscores our commitment to tackling the dual challenges of water scarcity and agricultural productivity. Through this cooperation framework, countries in the Global South share knowledge, technology, and best practices to drive sustainable development.
As a ministry, we are actively engaging the private sector to develop innovative solutions for harnessing water through irrigation. These partnerships are key to scaling up efficient water management systems, enhancing resilience, and boosting agricultural productivity, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions.
Kenya’s involvement in this cooperation is vital for accelerating climate-smart agriculture and improving food security through shared expertise and practical solutions tailored to our context.
