Academic twitter, I have a tricky problem that I could need some advice on. A while ago I gave a public lecture at a university. I don't want anyone personally to get accused in public, so let me just say it's a very well known university in a wealthy country. You can be confident they don't have financial problems. The invitation comes from a student association. They say they will provide accommodation in a college and cover my travel expenses. They can't pay a honorarium. I usually don't give lectures without honorarium. If I work, I expect to get paid for it. But it's a student group and I'm a nice person, sometimes, so I say yes. I arrive at the college to check into my room but am told that no booking exists for me and also they have no free rooms left. I can't reach the person I had been in contact with, it's pouring buckets sideways or however the Brits put that, and so I book myself into a hotel next to the university. It's not exactly cheap, but a reasonable price for the location. The seminar organizer, after I can reach her, apologizes profoundly, says someone forgot to make the booking, and that of course they would reimburse my expenses. Alright, I think, shit happens. And in any case, it's all sorted now anyway. I return home and hand in my receipts. Then they get back to me saying they don't have enough money to reimburse me, therefore they won't pay my flight. wtf? I am very not amused about this and prepared to pursue the matter legally. But my problem is now the following. The person I had been in contact with is fairly young, probably a student. Technically I think she will be liable for the expenses because she was the one who confirmed that they would be reimbursed. However, I don't think she was the one who caused the problem and also she probably isn't exactly flush in money either. I have no other contact who has been involved in this. So what do I do? I feel like I should escalate this issue up the food chain, so to speak, but not sure to whom. The department head?
