@arindube @marcvelitrae Economists these days are so useless. These businesses run on the thinnest margins. People get fired all the time for that reason. If you raise the wage, you have to raise the quality of the worker so you can have less.

If my "story" (told by comparing administrative data on earnings and jobs covering over 90 percent of all jobs in America across two groups of states) is correct, you wouldn't hear much news at all. "Jobs didn't change much" is not exactly an attention-grabbing headline most newspapers run.

@youmediv @arindube Uh, what do you mean some losses? You can tell who never worked in the restaurant. There's a reason waitresses freak out every time someone talks about putting them on minimum wage, and it's because it's a huge pay cut compared to tips (especially untaxed).

@arindube Great analysis but why did you choose restaurant workers as main argument? While it is apples to apples comparison it ignores that tips can absorb some losses restaurants experience from wage increase, not to mention laws often exclude them explicitly?

I traded in my iPad last March of 2025. I had an issue with the cellular/ WiFi they couldn’t solve. I was given store credit. They didn’t connect it to my account but gave me a physical card- which I didn’t remember. I walk into the NPM store in Dallas yesterday where I did my trade in simply to check my credit was still valid and make sure it hadn’t expired. Turns out the store credit is a gift card and those never expire. Great news. Bad news- I have my original receipt all the iPad information and the actual gift card number on it- but they cannot issue me a new card. Why? Because the receipt number of my trade in is pulling up some recent transaction where someone bought a new phone online. Why online transactions do not have their own identifier does not make sense to me. It’s only been just over a year. Regardless the paper trail is gone? The store can find my receipt as they printed it for me. I have my original email. I have my ID. I have the whole history of my account. Nada. Transfer, transfer, transfer, submit receipt to secure message, repeat submit secure message, waiting on call back. They can see the receipt. They can see the gift card. They have access to deactivate the gift card. They cannot provide me with the pin? You know since they cannot reissue my credit? If I find this card somewhere deep in my office- I will be back still angry. Why? This data issue of someone’s new purchase should not have wiped out my paper trail of my transaction. I say that as I am stuck on but they can pull my receipt up. I’m hitting my head against a wall here. That dmn iPad still haunting me.
