Purchasing Manager Index (ISM) is measured as a "DIRECTION". "Better" > 50 "Same" = 50 "Worse" < 50 But the output is read as a "LEVEL". PMI is about whether conditions are getting better or worse from last month - not whether the economy is strong or weak in absolute terms. Compare it to: Did you lose weight over the last month? "Yes" "Same" "Gained" Now - if I say YES - even multiple months - I cannot conclude that I'm slim. I can still weigh 200 kg - only that it is maginally better. Reading PMI as a level is a categorical error! And furthermore..... it is performed on the SENTIMENT of people - with adoptive EXPECTATIONS. It is a BAD measure for the STATUS and OUTLOOK of the Economy - which also shows in its historical performance. Now - remember this the next time when your Macro Analyst talks about the importance of PMI 😉
