It's hard to understand why an economics professor showing concern for a student would be thrown to the ground and arrested. This is not an obvious way to defuse a crisis.

@geo3550 what is the containment and surveillance of which you speak? there are free speech zones and there are likely some members of the local police force on hand but at a distance. of the available repertoire of activities that could be used, michigan has been quite respectful.

Seeing that brute-force backfired at Columbia, Humboldt, etc, U Michigan opts for containment and surveillance. Faculty must not commend admins for using more sophisticated repressive strategies, but rather ask themselves what they can materially do to stop participating in genocide.
