@Papaioeajake *rates can reduce the incentive to build so there can be some small, indirect and delayed effect iff public home building is insufficient. Land value rates would avoid this but it's a minor effect and is far outweighed by the benefit tenants get from increased council services

@Papaioeajake Increasing rates doesn't increase rent prices.* Increasing rates benefits tenants and costs landlords, that's why landlords are always so against it. Whatever point you think you're making isn't helping.

People who live in their own home pay rates. Landlords don’t. They pass it on and they can get a tax deduction so long as they don’t admit they are passing it on. They also get tax deductions for insurance, home repairs, legal fees, advertising + interest on their mortgages

@PedagogyMaxima yes but the drain must be more than the benefit......for example the retirement age has to go up and GST has to go up.....so there must be negative benefit for kiwis?

Just a reminder the same minister saying there's no money for teachers or nurses or doctors spent a billion dollars on a single helicopter that's main purpose would be to attack our largest trading partner

A year ago, anti-war and pro-Palestinian delegates inside the Democratic Party urged the Harris campaign and the DNC to take a few basic steps: - Invite a Palestinian American speaker to address the party’s convention in the largest Palestinian city in the U.S. - Support a new policy ending unrestricted weapons transfers to the Israeli government. - Meet in Michigan with Palestinian and Lebanese American families who lost loved ones to Israeli bombs. - Issue a public statement or interview in which Harris or Walz explained how their Israel policy would differ from both Biden’s and Trump’s. - A statement outlining how a Harris administration would uphold U.S. and international law regarding weapons transfers. Every ask we made was rejected. Some delegates lost their jobs. That wasn’t just factional maneuvering. It was a real attempt to change policy. What we hit was a wall: risk-aversion, ideology, donor pressure, deference to center-left Jewish institutions still supporting unconditional weapons transfers, and Biden himself. We tried. jacobin.com/2024/11/the-le…

The dynamics of the wellington mayoral race are so bad. The frontrunner andrew little is determined to do as little as possible and his main rival is one of the dumbest and weirdest people in nz protecting little from even having to pretend to try

@MaxWatersNZ @EDTheDicta17093 @jofromgreylynn Cigarettes are good to smuggle because they're small and light for their price. At $20 a kg (gross) out of a country as isolated as NZ you're gonna struggle to make any money.

@MaxWatersNZ @EDTheDicta17093 @jofromgreylynn This exists in Indonesia for coal and palm oil, it's called a DMO. It's not an export ban and nor is it a maximum export quota. The proportion that must be sold domestically can be adjusted regularly as required in response to changes in domestic production or consumption.

@MaxWatersNZ @jofromgreylynn This is a pretty dumb comment because minimum domestic sale requirements are not that difficult to implement and would still allow around 95% of dairy output to be exported for international prices

Because it's an international market. Unless you ban exports of dairy, you pay the international price. A real economy would generate concurrent growth in incomes so it wouldn't matter. In NZ we import low wage migrants, export high value products and have the dead weight of iwi giveaways, green taxes and a huge beneficiary population but we don't generate the domestics capital formation and growth to pay for any of that.

Was anyone asking The Spinoff's Duncan Greive to go out of his way to defend Chris Bishop? He believes Bishop was "likely trying and failing to express" his problem with the politically-aligned Toitū te Tiriti org, rather than just being, y'know, another CONSERVATIVE.

For a lot of young people in New Zealand inheritance is the only credible pathway to home ownership. The @NZGreens want to rob young kiwis of that pathway with their new $88bn of new taxes, including an inheritance tax. The average house price in Auckland is $1.2m, meaning anyone that inherits a home from their parents in Auckland would be hit with a massive tax bill. In this dangerous nonsense becomes a reality, watch young kiwis take off overseas.

@matty_prasad @StuartBDonovan They love to complain about infrastructure types where you can add supply faster than you can add demand as well You can add capacity to a school in like a year, to add demand takes multiple years to make the homes and then multiple more years to make the kids

@cjsbishop It is a reprehensible position to take. The mere suggestion that Jewish people deserve to face this kind of hate because of actions of a Govt in another country is bigotry and morally wrong h. He should be ashamed. So should his wife.
