🟩Move Money Like Data: the new standard x402 The new open protocol x402 has been announced by @coinbase and @Cloudflare. This standard creates a native blockchain agnostic payment layer for the web. An important standard to enable agentic, micro and pay-per-use payments. The impact is clear for me, @indexingco and The Neighborhood, but let's start with a quick overview 🧵 x402 turns the internet into a payment network. Since 1997 the internet has had a HTTP 402 “Payment Required” code. This code basically says, you can access this resource but only if you pay first. Back then there was no global internet system like @PayPal or crypto and even credit cards couldn’t support these kinds of payments. 402 was not used and left as a placeholder for future use. That future is now with x402. This protocol extends the original 402 status code defining exactly how to handle payments using crypto and stablecoins over a normal web request. So instead of saying “Please pay” and nothing happens, it actually says “Please Pay [AMOUNT] [CURRENCY] [WHERE TO SEND FUNDS TO]”. This is what standards/protocols do, they make people and applications agree on what information is needed to successfully cooperate. The flow looks like this: 1. Client initiates request to the server for a paid resource 2. The server responds with the x402 including the payment details (currency/token, chain, amount, receiving address, etc) 3. The client submits the payment payload 4. The server verifies the payment and confirms the transaction 5. The server settles the payments and confirms transaction is completed 6. Server responds with the requested resource In short: > Request a resource and get the payment details in a 402 response > Pay instantly with crypto > Get access to the resource This creates an instant, account-free and programmable layer. Which enables users, machines, apps and agents to transact automatically: true micro and agentic payments. Why is this massively exciting for me, @indexingco and more importantly our data network, The Neighborhood? So far most payment solutions have been focussed on submitting payments onchain. The read and confirmation layer of these payments is equally important: if there is a payment dropping and nobody is there to listen to it, did it even happen? [Replace payment with tree for a philosophical discussion]. The Neighborhood is already processing payments and wallet to wallet transactions for parties like Mesh and Cordial systems. We have dedicated indexing for payments, capable of tracing and decoding these transactions across multiple chains, across millions of wallets. The Neighborhood can track these payments even through swaps and bridges. And always in real-time. The next step is even more relevant to x402. The Neighborhood itself is on its path to be a public network, which means you can request data and pay for it onchain. Users will be able to pay for data directly onchain through The Neighborhood, regardless of where their funds are. Any chain connected to the Neighborhood will enable: - Their builders to pay for data onchain - Compute and data providers to be paid for that data onchain - Native real-time payment tracking system enabling fast payment confirmations and analytics This will empower any chain to amass payment flows, which means data infra is now finally not extracting data (and value) from the chains. It’s actually contributing both transactions and quality data infra. With The Neighborhood, payments become data and data enables payments. With x402, The Neighborhood becomes the value network.
