This is my grid for career success:
1. Good at job, liked
2. Good at job, disliked
3. Bad at job, liked
4. Bad at job, disliked
You want to be above the line, or to the right. Recongizeing where you sit is important.
Being above the line is how you get paid. Being on the right gives you the ability to make mistakes and makes work somewhat enjoyable.
Under no circumstance can you be in quadrant 4.
Being good at work is very hard. Being a good person really isnt. I think being on the right side of the line should always be the bare minimum. This gives you time. Plus, you can get pretty far by just being liked.
Safest bet, I think, is being average at work and being well liked. But if your average at work and disliked, you’re cooked.
So on and so forth.
Fun little thought experiment. What you think?
