Let me be real clear. My stomach turns for Gaza. Arab, Jew, I am neither and so the suffering feels chaotic all the same.
But I learned my history. And Holocaust denial is not something I am willing to fuck around with.

Oliver Couto, the owner of @torontobeeshop, has been arrested by Toronto Police for the Willful Promotion of Hatred.
We covered the story on the flyers in question nearly a year ago.

The Bee Shop @torontobeeshop is a store in Downtown Toronto specializing in honey & apitherapy products. They also specialize in handing out inciting Anti-Semitic flyers regarding Jews & the famous Anti-Semitic literature of the "The Protocols Of The Elders of Zion." Within this specific document, it lists all the worldly problems Jews are responsible for, including: "Take control of the media." "Start fights between different races." "Use bribery, threats, and blackmail." "Sacrifice People." "Eliminate religion." "Corrupt minds with filth & perversion." "Take possession of all wealth." "Give bad advice to governments." This was handed out by the owner of the store Oliver Couto. When confronted about it, he refused to take any responsibility for it nor apologize. For Rosh Hoshana, you may not want to dip your apples in honey from this obviously Anti-Semitic vendor.

@aliyapabani If you believe that Israeli's themselves are some evil incarnate then yes, this is a non-starter. I believe Israeli's and Palestinian's are people who for the most part are desperate for peace and I see humanity on both sides. That is the only path forward

What is conspicuously absent here is a clear condemnation from civil society. Mastracci is doxxing Jewish children and calling it journalism. Is everybody ok with that? 11/x

@aliyapabani I support Israel, I do not support the current government's actions. I supported the Rabin government and all Israeli governments working towards peace. I do not support Hamas. I support the Palestinian right to peace.

@aliyapabani I'm not recasting it as Jewish targetting. My argument is it presents itself that way (maybe not to you, but it will to somebody). And frankly supporting Israel versus supporting the actions of its government are two different things.

This is generational trauma in our lived exp

And we do so while wanting peace for the region. Blaming Canadian Jews for the actions of the Israeli government is a hateful position.

@aliyapabani A website sharing a list of Jewish citizens and institutions will strike fear in many Jews given our recent past. We have been a target of hate and violence in Canada since October 7th, and I find it difficult how anyone can view this website as not potentially stoking flames

But this is not the same as what has happened in Canada since Oct. 7 and Jesse is correct to call out this new version of anti-jewish hate

@NoLore @Mark_Goldberg @JesseBrown @DavideMastracci @readthemaple I am concerned about the safety of my community in Canada, while acknowleding the horror of war in Israel/Palestine (and hoping lasting peace can be achieved). Jesse is the only journalist who seems to try to give a voice to the documented rise in anti-jewish hate in Canada.
