Washing clothes used to take up the entire day. It all started with that heavy wooden hamper in the corner.
You would pull out the thick cloth bag bursting with clothes. Sorting the fabrics and colors required careful attention to detail. The rhythmic chug of the wringer washer filled the house. Every piece was guided through those heavy rollers by hand.
Then came the crisp walk out to the clothesline outside. Hanging wet sheets with wooden pins was honest, hard work. The sun and wind provided the freshest scent imaginable. It was a full event that brought a deep sense of accomplishment. You appreciated clean clothes much more when you worked for them. Those simple, structured days hold a very special charm.
