Parrett IDB controlling a highly invasive aquatic plant, floating pennywort, around Westonzoyland on the Somerset Levels. The machine was pressure washed after the operation to prevent transport to a new location. #biosecurity

An important 🧵 👇 from @waterlevels showing the threat from #invasivenonnativespecies 🍀 in our lowland aquatic environment & the value of having a local #InternalDrainageBoard @IDBsomerset able to intervene & work with partners @EnvAgencySW @SRAnews @SomersetCouncil @NE_Wessex

Wetland invasive species #SomersetLevels a small patch of Floating Pennywort has been found in the Penzoy river near Middlezoy. The first record of pennywort in a pump drained channel on the Somerset Levels (Westonzoyland pumps).

@IDBsomerset has responded quickly and already searched this location twice and removed any pennywort found, we will continue our effort. We are also working with @EnvAgencySW on a Somerset wide programme of pennywort surveillance and control.

If pennywort is allowed to establish here it will fill and clog the Penzoy and spread downstream into the Kings Sedgemoor Drain. It has the potential to be an enormous problem with serious consequences for flood management and wetland ecology.

Looks like one of @waterlevels @IDBsomerset tilting weirs carefully retaining water safely for the #SomersetLevels. #InternalDrainageBoards have a vital role for lowland peatlands. We're excited to be on that journey with Small Infrastructure Pilots announced yday by @DefraGovUK

We’ve announced new investment & actions to improve lowland #peat & reduce carbon emissions I recently visited the Somerset Levels to see how one farmer was trialling paludiculture by raising water levels-producing sustainable food while absorbing carbon & boosting #biodiversity

The environment agency has inspected 4000 farms and found 5,500 non compliance issues. Shows the importance of regulatory enforcement, not just for the environment but also to create a level playing field for those farms who are spending money to do the right thing.
House of Lords Built Environment Committee@HLBuiltEnviro

2/3 “We had over 4,000 farming inspections which we targeted at those who we thought were causing the most problems. It showed there is a problem. Of those 4,000 inspections we found 5,500 non-compliances. Rather than going straight to enforcement…”
