A response to those supporting the Greens’ plan to give $4b of taxpayers’ money to arms companies, or otherwise supporting defence of Australia. amassofothergerms.wordpress.com/2025/03/28/not…
@rjsdev I broadly agree, Rob, but unsure on this part:
"[We need to] fight for their secure employment with just transition plans to use their skills to constructive ends."
I don't support job security as it exists precisely because I want to re-allocate them away from sector.
@rjsdev For e.g on weapons exports, we should stop F-35s & so strive for shutting down *those* jobs & having people manufacture other stuff. It's diff to fossil fuels bc local weapons manufacturing debate here is about starting an industry, or companies that also make other stuff.
@EvComrade Not that different from fossil fuels, since there is already plenty of arms mfg here. The key is winning the confidence of the workers involved that their personal economic security is assured as they move to socially useful work. The details of how that’s done can be flexible.
@rjsdev Fair. Plenty is doing a lot of work in that statement, tho, since Oz is one of the biggest coal exporters in the world & fossil fuels power things ppl need. OTOH instigator of this is Greens saying we should make *new* investment in missiles. There's differences.
