While everyone fixates on the heatwave in the western U.S., Alaska, Canada, and the eastern U.S. are very cold relative to average. People seem to forget that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. Fairbanks, Alaska, for instance, bottomed out at -40°F yesterday morning. That marked the 7th occurrence this month—a new record (they date back to 1904). With 31 such readings this winter, that's the 4th most on record. I am not downplaying the heatwave out west; it's very impressive and record-shattering in many cases. But events this extreme tell us nothing about long-term climate. Even without global warming, this heatwave would still be occurring right now, and it would still be record-shattering because temperatures would only be a degree or two cooler at most. We are seeing daily and monthly records for stations being broken by five or ten degrees plus. Drs.
