The big problem with them is they never really improve that much as the series goes on. Bolin gets lavabending in S3, and that's pretty much it

@godofavatar Toph is insane but she could lost. Makko bends lightning very easily and Bolin can make the ground under toph become lava in seconds. It's not a good match for her. Ya'll all treat TLOK like trash when they are actually strong.

Fire is also very dependent on any kind of breathing for chi generation which extends to lightning and zaheer can vacuum ppl

Like if this were a later season, yeah, katara probably sweeps mako no issue, but it's season 1. Mako can use lightning, has actual combat training, and just flat out has more experience

@SAPWharton @godofavatar Even Tenzin, a master evaluate and said about how basic the bending used by pro bender was. The little game was nothing compared to real life combats, Mako and Bolin struggled so much during the whole show to even survive. They were nothing, not even master of their elements.
