In the late 2010s-early 2020s, there was a concentrated efforts from the powers that be to destroy Austin in a similar manner to how Seattle and the other west coast cities were destroyed. Ultimately they failed. There was good pushback from both the (red) state government as well as local citizens who got fed up with Steve Adler and the reckless city council. Prop B cleared out the vagrant encampments. The state forced Austin to un-defund the police. There are legacy elements that remain, like how Austin still has a Soros DA (Jose Garza) who really could use a DOJ investigation into conspiracy against rights for what he's done. That all said. The efforts to destroy Austin failed. Life is coming back to 6th Street. New fun bars are opening like Powder Room and The Betty. Despite what you might have heard from slop commenters online, Austin is not a "liberal hellhole." It's always been a quirky music/art city, but there are plenty of gun ranges, lots of veterans living there, there's defense tech, and the party scene during COVID 2020 was lit. DJs every weekend in Zilker Park. Boat parties. I predict that part of the coming urban renaissance, Austin is going to be a big part of that. We're taking our cities back.
