@plainrunner2 I do believe that - however his personal beliefs may or may not be evolving - in his movies he’s been walking closer and closer to the fence lately, though.

@plainrunner2 “Not prepared to jump the fenice” is a very interesting definition.

I like Nolan's films (the only one I haven't seen is Oppenheimer). Some of them I find to be exceptional. However, "Interstellar" seems to me to be the biggest tipoff to how he views the divine. He doesn't entirely discount the possibility of a theistic ordering, but he can't bring himself to embrace it either, choosing instead to weight his hope on the choices men make, even if it must involve a bootstrap paradox. What I see is a careful agnosticism that glances over to those fields full of gods and monsters, but is not prepared to jump the fence. I'll be curious how this read takes shape in "The Odyssey," if at all. I could be completely off...

What is this “Defy the gods” nonsense? Yes, Homer’s paganism is simply a shadow of the Christological reality, but in his story/world, such words would mark him as doomed by the very type of arrogance the poem warns against. Odysseus survives not by defying the divine order, but by learning to live inside it. Hollywood can barely tell a story; how can we expect them to accurately portray myth?

@Arkhairo It’s not explicit. I’m not even sure it’s something conscious or intentional on Nolan’s part, but I do believe it’s there.

Monday is the centenary of CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien meeting – CSL said JRRT 'only needs a slap or two'. Tolkien was 34, Lewis was 27. Without their friendship and synergy, so much that I hold dear wouldn't exist, including many of my own friendships. Thank God for May 11, 1926.

@TheMiddleborne Which saddens me a bit, because I’ve been waiting for this movie and I was hoping the trailer would shoot my anticipation to the stars.

@TheMiddleborne “It’s a trailer” was essentially my reaction, too.

@Arkhairo Tenet has some suprisingly theologically-laden moments, and Oppenheimer has always felt to me like a moral/spiritual drama more than a political one. "Defy the gods" may be the starting point. I believe it won't be the end of it.

@Arkhairo Also, I think his movies in the last 15 years or so (with - maybe - the exception of Dunkirk) have been moving on a thematical trajectory that, starting from an emphasis on Man as inventor, explorer and creator, is beginning to simultaneously reflect on Man as creature.

I’m not sure how effective it will prove to be as a marketing strategy in this case, with so much anticipation, so much competition (I’m just a casual enjoyer of Villeneuve’s Dune movies, but I found the latest trailer impressive) and such a well-known subject matter.

I don’t think this trailer is among Nolan’s best or most effective ones. But it doesn’t necessarily mean the actual film won’t be among his best, or that it will even have the same feel as the trailer. Nolan likes to keep the “core” of his movies hidden.

@FrMatthewLC I understand why you’d be upset at the wording, but I think Gibson was talking more about the symbolic/visual impact of his own movie than about the events he’s portraying. “Passion” was bold, but reverent.
