Government of West Bengal is exploring the procurement of lightweight, modern tramcars from overseas—reportedly drawing inspiration from contemporary Australian systems—to revive Kolkata's historic tram network. Authorities also plan route viability studies and are considering restoring corridors such as Esplanade–Kidderpore. Founded in 1873 and electrified in 1902, Kolkata operates Asia's oldest tram network and India's only surviving tram system. Once spanning dozens of routes, services are now limited to just two corridors. The proposed modernization aims to combine heritage preservation with zero-emission urban mobility, potentially transforming trams from a tourism symbol into a functional component of Kolkata's public transport network once again.
