China feeds 1.4 billion people while controlling less arable land per person than almost any major economy on earth. Xi Jinping has mentioned food security in over 450 speeches since 2013. That is not confidence. That is anxiety dressed up as policy. The numbers explain why. China's overall food self-sufficiency rate dropped from 94% in 2000 to 66% in 2020. Chinese experts are warning it could fall to 59% by 2030. In 2023, China imported a staggering $215 billion worth of food, making it the world's largest food importer. A country that projects military dominance across the Indo-Pacific cannot feed itself without the rest of the world's cooperation. The land situation makes it worse. China has 31% less arable farmland than the United States while feeding four times the population. Between 2009 and 2021, it lost over 12 million hectares of farmland to urbanization, pollution, and climate damage. The soil it still has is being pushed past its limits: China's fertilizer usage per hectare is over three times that of the US and the EU. Water is the next crisis. China has roughly the same freshwater resources as the US but uses more than twice as much for agriculture. The regions most dependent on farming are also the driest. Climate change is accelerating droughts and floods simultaneously. A 2023 study found extreme rainfall alone already cut Chinese rice yields by 8% over two decades. And soybeans are the single most exposed pressure point. China relies on foreign suppliers for over 80% of its soybeans, mostly Brazil and the US. When the 2025 trade war escalated, China effectively boycotted US soybeans, cutting purchases from 72,800 tons in a single week to just 1,800 tons. Brazil rushed to fill the gap, accounting for 93% of China's soybean imports by mid-2025. But Brazil runs on harvest cycles. Between October 2025 and February 2026, analysts warned China could face genuine shortage windows when old Brazilian crop stocks ran dry before the new harvest arrived. The CCP understands this vulnerability better than anyone. It holds grain stockpiles so large they reportedly represent half of all global grain reserves, at a cost of $10 billion per year in storage, roughly 20 times what all OECD countries spend combined. It is spending $4.4 billion annually on agricultural innovation. Xi himself declared that "the rice bowls of the Chinese people must be firmly in our own hands." But here is the strategic reality that matters. Every country that exports food to China has leverage over Beijing that Beijing cannot eliminate. Brazil, Argentina, the US, Ukraine, Australia: these are not just trading partners. They are pressure points. The CCP built its domestic legitimacy on stability and prosperity. A government that cannot reliably feed its people at stable prices faces the kind of internal crisis that no amount of censorship fully contains.
