It shouldn’t be this way. I requested a clean Priority Handle (@gregoo) through X’s Handle Marketplace. It got approved as a “free” perk for Premium+ subscribers. Here’s the reality most people don’t fully clock upfront: It’s not a permanent upgrade. You get a limited, revocable, non-transferable license only. If you ever cancel or downgrade Premium+ ($40/month or $395/year), X gives you a 30-day grace period. After that, your account automatically reverts to your old handle (@gregoo_x) and the new one gets reclaimed. X owns every handle. For Priority Handles (full names, phrases, alphanumeric combos), you’re essentially renting a nicer username for life at the top tier price. (Rare handles you pay thousands for are usually keepable even after canceling.) This is the same pattern we’ve seen recently: • X Pro (the old TweetDeck multi-column tool) just got moved behind the $40 paywall with little warning. • More features keep getting gated at Premium+: full ad-free experience, max Grok access, largest reply boost, Radar Search, Articles, etc. The core of X — posting, reading, engaging — still works fine on free or lower tiers. Yet Premium+ at $40/month feels increasingly like a bundle of recurring rentals rather than meaningful ownership or lasting value. Handles should be a fun, one-time way to build your identity on the platform. Not another subscription you have to pay forever or risk losing your established name. It shouldn’t be this way. A better approach would treat identity features like handles as permanent once earned (with reasonable rules), while reserving high recurring costs for truly premium tools and ad removal. X has pushed hard on subscriptions to diversify revenue, but with paying users still a tiny fraction of the total audience and ongoing complaints about value, moves like this risk frustrating the very people who want to stay and invest in the platform. If you’re considering a Priority Handle: weigh the long-term commitment carefully. It’s not “claim it and it’s yours” — it’s claim it and keep paying $40/mo indefinitely. What do you think? For anyone wanting a specific username, the catch is you gotta stay on Premium+. You can’t go back to the regular plan and keep it. Also, nowhere does it say that I have to keep Premium+, but here we are. I don’t think just changing a username is worth $40 a month or $32 a month if you get the annual plan. @elonmusk @grok @X @XHandles
