@LocalMileMN

We should all be able to safely and comfortably bicycle a mile or two to a local school, grocery, or café.

@RadwegH @BobFromAccounts Yes. Though over 50% of incidents are resolved at the scene. They're really a paramedic, not an ambulance.

@BobFromAccounts I assume the primary objective is to reach the patient as quickly as possible to initiate first aid or initial treatment, while the ambulance is on its way to take over and transport the patient once they’ve been stabilized.

7:30 AM, Soho, London. If there was ever any question about the fastest way to get from A to B in the middle of a vast city, these incredible men and women demonstrate the answer. ❤️ London Ambulance

@FrederickMelo Unfortunately behind a paywall and for the few PP articles I'm interested in (your's and a few others) not worth the cost and primarily the PITA of signing up.

@Jon_Hartley_ In speed, comfort and amenities @GoBrightline is about 40 years behind other developed countries. Sad when something like this is held up as a success by Americans.

The Brightline, a newly *privately* constructed, owned, and operated Florida railway from Miami to Orlando, is the most successful infrastructure story today in America. A thread on how it got done, how nice it is, and how it plans to replicate its success across America 🇺🇸 🧵

A related bit is how it affects decision making. When costs of roads are subsidized as they are now then a mfr can choose to locate as far from their customers as they desire. If they have to pay for what they actually use via a wheelage fee then they'll be incented to make better decisions. Similarly choosing where to live. If we feel the cost of each mile we drive then we might choose to live closer to where we need to go and maybe even choose to walk or ride a bicycle rather than drive a car.

One advantage of the "pay your fair share" argument is you don't have to define fairness. It doesn't matter to these people that gas tax doesn't even cover half the cost of car infrastructure. What's wildly unfair is using general fund taxes to bail out drivers.
Fleetwood Max Headroom@JLBnEspi

@jones_amgwagon @Boenau Then pay your fair share...pretty simple..you want your dedicated infrastructure, open your wallet...ya freeloading fuck..

@Boenau Wrong question. It's not speed that kills but inattentive driving. Right Question: If an engineer can't be trusted to design roads that insure safety for ALL users (e.g., CROW), which of these would be the best penalty: Fired, or ...Fired.

@Boenau We need a law mandating that dumpsters be made of plastic from recycled plastic bollards so that drivers vehicles won't be hurt when they hit them.

Ams includes a lot of infra that's dated and now known to be not-so-safe like some painted bikeways, DZBL's, etc. Many bikeways need to be expanded as well. Slowly improving however! These are much less likely in Utrecht, etc. Groningen does have one of the more dangerous roundabouts in NL though and did have a street shared by bikes & buses that was quite uncomfortable.

@WarrenJWells Or if the bikeway were flatter and the freeway adjusted accordingly then it might be bike infra.

@WarrenJWells That's car infra. If it went under and was well designed for social and physical safety then in would be bike/ped infra.

@PhinHarper I don't disagree with what you've written but Amsterdam is actually rather not-so-great compared to places like Utrecht, Groningen and a few others.

@iyemono @EngineerDustin Those would not be 'accidents'. They would crashes, injuries and deaths caused by intentionally poor design engineering.

@EngineerDustin Guidance is avoid them, either have a proper intersection with a properly protected bike lane behind an island that right-turning traffic has to circle around, or just don't allow right turns at all. This is ASKING for accidents.

Ok bike nerds, who has guidance for these "20 ft" bike lane tapers that get installed before the mixing zone of dedicated right turn lanes?

@EngineerDustin Get rid of the mixing zones. There is no way to make them safe. Install proper protected bikeways built to CROW specs. (Why do U.S. traffic engineers want to make targets out of people on bicycles?)

"Separated bicycle lanes have an overall improved safety performance." This new @USDOT report could prove handy when facing small businesses or car owners who use bogus bike lane concerns to conceal a lust for on-street parking. fhwa.dot.gov/environment/bi…

@DavidZipper @USDOT This is a step forward, but a very small one. It's like getting excited because the school bully says that they'll now only beat us up 4 times per day instead of 5.

@DavidZipper @USDOT Very disappointing that in the 'existing design guidance' they completely ignore CROW. And it shows in the antiquated design guidance of this document. It's no wonder that U.S. traffic engineers continue to design the most dangerous road systems of all developed countries.
