Quinnipiac samples way too many fake Independents in their Random Direct Dialing polls and thus end up with outlandish results for those Independents. They don't attempt to screen out people who are not really independents. In a registered voter poll taken seven months before the election, Independents should not be over 50% in favor of Democrats in a non-forced-two-way poll. Even more so if only 28% of them have a favorable opinion of them. Into the trash they go.

@RealSKeshel It is a weird dynamic that plays out. My understanding of this year’s midterms are 1. The Democrats don’t have an actual platform and aren’t running on anything other than “Orange Man Bad.” 2. Voters are totally cool with that message.

It’s ridiculous that, given access to more information than any group of people ever to have lived, people still can’t figure out off-year, special election, and midterm dynamics. They almost always go against the president’s party. Ask Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts how special elections go. Any major upsets by either party in a special election will flip in the next general election. Case closed.
Dan Merica@merica

Safe to say Dems are buoyant: “Mar-a-Lago just flipped red to blue, which should have Republicans sweating the midterms,” said Heather Williams, president of the @DLCC. “If Mar-a-Lago is vulnerable, imagine what’s possible this November.” More here: washingtonpost.com/politics/2026/…

@ScottPresler You are well aware that the Senate requires a 60-vote threshold to move anything forward. There are 53 GOP Senators.

If our Republican Senate is unable to pass legislation that 84% of Americans agree on, then nothing is going to get done. There is no legislation that is as popular & widely supported as the SAVE America Act.

To fix the Republicans in the US Senate, we need to eliminate a few of them. 2026: we must eliminate John Cornyn, replacing him with Ken Paxton. 2028: Lisa Murkowski (Alaska) and John Thune (South Dakota) must be primaried 2030: John Curtis (Utah) They need to be afraid.

@MarkHalperin @NextUpHalperin Conventional wisdom actually says the opposite. Democrats have never been favored to win the Senate. Due to polarization, they'll be lucky to win back the House.

Conventional wisdom says Democrats are favored to win the Senate. My deep reporting says that’s wrong. On today’s @NextUpHalperin, I break down the 9 races that will decide control—and why even a near-perfect Democratic run might not be enough. You haven’t seen the map like this before. So, even that level of Dem overperformance -- in a low turnout special election -- would only translate into a 3-seat Senate pickup... and not enough for a majority. That said, those red states look like real battlegrounds now.

From the lens of the FL special election upset last night: The Mar-a-Lago district was Trump +11 in 2024. The red-state battlegrounds for Dems: Ohio: Trump + 11 Iowa: Trump +13 Florida: Trump +13 Alaska: Trump +14 Texas: Trump +14

DHS funding deal is falling apart. Senate GOP offered to fund all of DHS, except ICE’s deportation wing (ERO). Dems just countered and demanded additional concessions, they want major ICE reforms (unmasking, judicial warrants, etc). GOP says why would we agree to reforms for an agency being defunded? Dems had an offer on the table to carve out ICE’s removal operations, and fund everything else within DHS, and they are saying no. They are demanding ICE reforms for an agency they aren’t going to fund. GOP saying no. And the shutdown continues - now on day 40.
