Agreed that it’s probably a mild form of hazing - BUT, certain specialties do require 24 hour shifts, and perhaps a med student ought to know if those specialties are a good fit for them.

@jzaraterod @Aidan_Baron @gthipps Yes I caught the very dreamy idealistic aspiration. My point is that they exist and people work them in high stakes environments. So students should prepare early and often.

@Aidan_Baron @gthipps Med students take themselves over seriously, but the stakes and consequences are so low. When you’re a solo resident in the ICU is not the time to experience this for the first time.

@Aidan_Baron @gthipps Firefighters. Many EDs in rural areas (some cover 72 hours at a time). Military special operations. Med school is the best time to be exposed to these rigors, to learn how to function better when tired, and to recognize one’s own signs of fatigue.
