@kengakusha1 It could happen both ways. Democrats playing conservative could try and offend Japanese folks as well.

This how you drive a wedge. Don't do this.

Make Japan the 51st state.
English

@PSouls2 @StateDept Yep, probably. NDAAs are annual bills, Congress passes ‘em every year with a straight vote (simple majority in both chambers, then prez signs).
English

@e_evancik @StateDept So the way I understand it next years NDAA could set troop levels to zero with a simple majority vote?
English

Rubio’s right, no treaty forces permanent troops. But FY26 NDAA (signed Dec ‘25) locks U.S. Europe forces at min 76k, no drop below without SecDef certifying to Congress: ally consults, security risks, full impact. Just red tape. Trump could push, but it’d drag.
Bases? 1951 NATO SOFA (London, June 1951) covers legal status, jurisdiction, taxes, but termination’s slow: any party denounces after 4 years, 1 year notice to U.S. Actual basing rights are bilateral (Germany, Italy deals), pulling those needs host talks, not instant.
So leverage exists, but it’s messy. If allies won’t host for Hormuz ops? Quiet drawdown’s possible, just not clean.

@StrangeAlienSky @Jadestormchase It was actually a Japanese American who gave us the Fujita scale for tornado strength rankings.
English

@Jadestormchase I felt like tornado chasing was an almost entire American phenomenon. I never would've imagined there were people in Japan so in love with weather they would travel to chase such dangerous storms. That is amazing! I hope you stay very safe but get some great footage!
English

@e_evancik @StateDept The NATO treaty does not actually require US troops to be in Europe. Just pull out all the troops without officially leaving NATO.
English

@StateDept The problem is, it takes 2/3 of Congress both parts to end us in NATO. And a 1 year notice.

日本には、自分の気に入らない党派性の人のことを「ネトウヨ」と罵倒する人びとがいます。アメリカでいうところの極左です。

@shironingyou Dumb joke. Sorry. Most Americans respect and admire Japan. Be warned some may want to destroy this conversation our two peoples have been having by being purposely offensive.

Seeing the Japanese defend America from Self-hating Americans has to be the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen

OK, since it appears that today is the day to discuss weird cultural differences between Japan and the USA, may I strongly recommend to all of my military history nerd followers that you watch “Girls und Panzer”?
It’s anime from Japan. You can find it on Amazon Prime.
Bear with me while I explain the insane premise.
It’s about Japanese all-girls schools that engage in the sport of “tankery.” These schoolgirls ride around in historically accurate, WWII-era armored fighting vehicles and engage in active combat that appears to include actual HEAT and sabot rounds, except when there is a hit nobody gets hurt and a little white flag pops out of the dead tank. So there is this big tankery tournament. But here’s where it gets even weirder: each school has the vehicles, resources, tactics and uniforms of a WWII combatant. So the US-style school has wayyyyy more logistics than anybody else, the Soviet school goes roaring across the steppes (see the video one comment post below) and the German school has the best tanks that break down a lot. Also the British school takes war breaks to drink tea.
Why would I recommend such a silly concept?
Because whoever did it went to a fanatical level of detail on the vehicles themselves and the associated tactics and employment, as well as very accurate propaganda themes from the era. It’s so incongruous—highly accurate military history and Japanese schoolgirl anime.
And I love incongruity in entertainment. It’s so silly, but in a weirdly addictive way. And I don't even watch anime.

The underrated part of this US-Japan exchange is Americans leftists getting to actually see how Japanese think.
Unbeknownst to Japan, there’s a weird sect of Americans leftists who glorify Japan, somehow thinking it represents their values because they build trains and public works. And a bunch of woke losers love anime.
In reality, Japan is a great country precisely because it’s the opposite of everything leftists support.
They have very little immigration. They don’t tolerate crime or antisocial behavior. They fiercely protect their culture and national heritage.
They even like the part of America that most aligns with their values. Notice how the woke freaks aren’t included in that.
What a sobering reality check for leftist morons. Thank you, Japan!

At least Japan and America have common enemies in each country, such as these
