@BriannaWu Ending financial support for Israel is not that radical of a position. It’s a relatively wealthy country, we don’t need to be supporting it financially.

The Democratic Party is trapped in a purity spiral. You take a reasonable issue, like being opposed to war crimes. And then, the radical fringe of our party takes that idea lefter and lefter and no adults are willing to hit the brakes. Are you opposed to strikes to take out terrorists where there could potentially be civilian casualties? That answer becomes Yes. And now we’re at the purity spiral point where Israel literally cannot defend itself ever. Israeli civilians are supposed to ignore missile strikes hitting their homes. It’s an insane position. I work in Democratic politics. Our fundamental problem is a moral cowardice, ironic since we spend so much time moralizing. It’s how we ended up with such extreme policies on trans women and immigration - which is to say no policy. This is not a party that is nationally viable. It’s not just about Israel. It’s about us being divorced from reality. America does not like the Republican Party, but if you force them to choose, they will pick assholes over cult delusion.
The Atlantic@TheAtlantic

If the Democratic establishment has any hope of holding on to the party, it should end American financial support for Israel—and if it doesn’t, the party will be overrun by a wing with far more radical beliefs, @jonathanchait argues. theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/04/…

@hecubian_devil So the axis of smart is different from the axis of respectful. There ARE smart, disrespectful kids, but by about 4th grade, they aren't doing well because you can't coast by reading the material, you need to pay attention in class and do the work.

@poisonjr @Tanya_Sabrinaaa This is a really dumb response to an article describing a technical issue, particularly when the proposed solution is to *pay* people to use excess electricity.

The thing about the UK is that if you look at high-end industries they are clearly Europe’s champion in finance & biotech & entertainment and probably in software as well, so you’d assume they are clearly richer on average than major continental countries but they’re not.
Tom Harwood@tomhfh

I think a huge part of the reason why no government has been able to enact difficult pro-growth reforms is that the average voter still believes we remain a rich country. You hear this in politicians’ rhetoric “the sixth richest country in the world”. We’re the sixth largest economy but now far from the richest. Per capita we’re tanking down the rankings. One of the reasons why Poland or China have been able to have growth miracles in recent years is they think like a developing country. They know they were poor and they have to build to get rich. We think we are rich and that we don’t have to build anything anymore, or that when we do, it has to be the most expensive possible version of what we build. Bat tunnels. Fish Discos. Kittiwake hotels. We think we’re rich so we can afford to chase some wealth creators away, afford to mandate public biodiversity net gain on every development in the country, and afford to ratchet up state pension spending five times faster than the rate of growth in the economy. We’re suffering from acute ‘rich country delusion’. It’s only once we realise we’re far poorer than we should be that we can start to fix this nonsense.

Yes, a wide variety of minorities exist in the Middle East. But let’s go through some examples: Egypt: 98% Arab Saudi Arabia: 90% Arab Jordan: 98% Arab Lebanon: 95% Arab Syria: 85% Arab Yemen: 93% Arab Libya: 92% Arab Tunisia: 98% Arab That’s quite homogenous
Jeffrey Sachs@JeffreyASachs

The claim that most Middle Eastern states are "extremely homogenous" is, if true (it's not), an extremely alarming fact that ought to set off alarm bells in your head.

@souljagoyteller @arash_tehran Israeli citizenship is also not differentiated by ethnic identification. Israel has by far the largest “minority” population of citizens of any middle eastern state!

@arash_tehran Sure. But, unlike Israel, citizenship is not differentiated by ethnic identification (see Israel’s law of return). Most middle eastern states are extremely homogenous nation-states à la Japan and Hungary. Not ethnostates

An ethnostate is not simply just “a state that happens to mostly contain one ethnicity”. Lebanon is not an ethnostate. Neither is Iraq, Jordan, or Egypt. An ethnostate, for Israel specifically a “herrenvolk democracy”, is a state that builds its politics on representing one group

The leftists think they can just raise taxes and more money comes in for them to spend. Despite all of the evidence of wealth leaving when they raise taxes, they still do it. They simply lack the ability to change direction. The same thing is happening in Europe and Canada.

@matgalmn @souljagoyteller Actually, the OP (Sami Gold) was positing that Israel is uniquely an ethnostate in the region. As I and others pointed out, other states in the region are Islamic theocracies if not also Arab ethnostates.

@souljagoyteller @arash_tehran Right, because they don’t actually respect the Rule of Law they operate as de facto ethnostates rather than de jure ethnostataes. All this despite having little demographic pressure from ethnic minorities
