In the early 1840s, the Tokugawa shogunate passed strict censorship laws known as the Tenpō Reforms to stop luxury spending in society. The government banned ukiyo-e artists from drawing popular kabuki theater actors. Artists who broke these rules faced heavy penalties, including the destruction of their woodblocks. To get around the censorship, Kuniyoshi found a solution in humor. He began drawing the banned actors as cats, frogs, and bats. The people of Edo instantly recognized their favorite actors from the clothes and specific patterns these human-like animals wore. The artwork I'm sharing is a parody of Sukeroku Yukari no Edo Zakura, one of the most famous kabuki plays of its time. The cherry blossoms in the background serve as a visual nod to the phrase "Edo Cherry Blossoms" in the play's title. The bat on the left, with its purple headband and black appearance, plays the main character, Sukeroku. The white-bearded figure on the right takes on the role of the story's main villain, the old samurai Ikyu. In the original play, Sukeroku tries to provoke Ikyu into drawing his sword, hoping to find his stolen family heirloom sword. To anger him, he deliberately holds his pipe between his toes and offers it to him. In Japanese culture, it's an unacceptable insult to offer someone an object with your foot. The bat presenting the smoking accessory with its foot captures that iconic moment of provocation from the stage. The artist used his artistic cleverness to bypass the government bans and continued sharing the era's beloved theater scenes with the public.

First of all, I apologize for going #Offtopic, but I need to write these words and make them public—both so they reach the people with whom I have outstanding commitments and haven’t yet been able to fulfill my part, and for those (mostly long-time followers) who are aware of my medical condition and appreciate updates from time to time. Since 2022, I've been living with severe daily pain due to negligence during a nasal surgery—a procedure that was clearly unnecessary and for which no one is taking responsibility. What, at first, so-called ENT experts tried to pass off as Empty Nose Syndrome was “soon” revealed, thanks to a neurophysiological test, to be damage to my trigeminal nerve and several nasal nerves around it. To alleviate this situation, I underwent several radiofrequency treatments (without anesthesia), as well as injections of my own centrifuged plasma. At the same time, I underwent several weekly acupuncture sessions. Unfortunately for me, none of this produced any improvement. At the same time, enduring so much pain and stress over such a long period of time ended up damaging my jaw, for which I was fitted with a bite splint and received Botox injections in my masseter muscles. Neither of these measures relieved the pain. Recently, they tried iontophoresis (electroinoculations), vagus nerve stimulators, and another round of radiofrequency treatment, this time on both ganglia (since the pain is bilateral). After all these treatments, I’m actually feeling worse than ever. Right now I have indescribable pain throughout almost my entire skull, along with weakness and dizziness that I hadn’t experienced before. To put it simply, I’ve been suffering from pain for over four years now—pain that never lets up, not even during the day, despite taking painkillers and anti-inflammatories, nor at night (I wake up exhausted and have to sleep through the morning). Because of this disability, I can’t work, and if it weren’t for my parents and my girlfriend, I don’t know where I’d be financially or emotionally. And even so, I haven’t stopped fighting. I never stop hoping for a better tomorrow, nor do I stop being naturally curious. But when your health and energy aren’t on your side, it can become terribly frustrating. This account is one of the things that keeps me active and connected to reality, and over the past few years I’ve collaborated with various merchandising companies and development studios, always fulfilling my commitments. However, recently several of these projects have piled up over time due to scheduling conflicts and my health, and right now I feel these agreements are more of a burden than a benefit. That is why, for a few weeks or a little over a month, I need to lighten that load and will only be posting pre-rendered backgrounds, as I've been doing up until now. Thank you for taking the time to read all this, and I hope that soon I’ll be able to announce a somewhat more promising situation and be able to get back to working the way I like, and give my Patreon page and blog site a big boost. Smile 2 is a very good horror film. Would have been a great one if not for those pesky jump scares; they are few but lower the general quality of writing and craft put in there.

@according2seth It is not impossible to make a horror movie without too many very jumpscare which serve no other purpose than to make a loud bang. Whether it can be sold successfully is another issue.

Upon second viewing of Undertone, I can confidently say it’s the scariest film of the last decade. An auditory descent straight into hell. Seeing it in a theater where the sound surrounds you and drags you deeper into the film is an experience I truly never want to have again. Ian Tuason proves himself an incredible director with a massive future ahead. I swear I left the theater feeling cursed, and those final 30 minutes hit harder than anything I’ve seen in years. #undertone @a24
