@kengakusha1 I've always said that if I ever go to Japan, I want to see rural or suburban Japan. "Real Japan". I'm sure I'll get to see a city as I leave the airport, but the glamour seems unnecessary. I want to see a vending machine in a field, lol.

@realalicekato That's okay too. We can't take the attitude of needing to be glum because things aren't perfect. I don't think it's a coverup or even a distraction: it's people living their lives and not spending all day every day focusing on the bad.

As we say in America, "hold on to your butts". It's probably going to get weirder. As the novelty wears off, people will start to settle back down and the old favorite arguments will rise to the top again. Hopefully we can pick a few interesting people to hang onto before the tide goes back out.

The thing I have recently come to realize is how America has no social rules at all. I mean, I knew this, but in comparison to Japan, I don't think Japanese people understand how lawless social interactions are in America. One person will be shy and very difficult to befriend. Another person will think you are best friends after chatting with you for 5 minutes (which I generally find annoying). There are no rules. There is no "normal" here. I once had a nice conversation with a lady and in the end she cussed at me because I didn't ask her for her phone number. I didn't want her number! I thought we were just having a nice chat! There are no rules and it confuses everyone here too, lol.

(Disclaimer: I am not a real Japanese person but I want to answer anyway!) "It depends." The general rule of thumb is cheaper sake is better hot. Higher quality sake is better cold. The real truth is that ideally you would try a particular sake at all temperatures. Different temperatures bring out different parts of the flavor, while masking others. There are some expensive sakes that I enjoy hot, and some cheap ones that are good cold, and others that I think are best at room temperature. I really like drinking sake hot, though, so I try to find ones that taste best when hot!

@May_Roma In the end, we wouldn't ask you to be more American, so you can't expect to ask Americans to be more Japanese. That said, people who are needlessly boorish should be blocked. They are unlikely to improve.

I like tipping, personally. And I go out a lot. I tip probably 4-6 times a week. I tip more than 20% unless service is very bad. I feel like it's a way to encourage better service. If tipping didn't exist, restaurants would just have to raise prices to cover higher salaries, and then I bet the good servers would end up making less money. Usually I find servers are against the idea of removing tips!

There are always extremists. Americans tend to be more outspoken, so our extremists are loud too. Left extremists aren't much worse than right extremists. If someone said anime was morally corrupt ("degenerate") then it was probably actually a right extremist. Some of them think such things. It's not a popular opinion here.

@Mynameis_BLK In defense of any protestors, an American military base full of young energetic American soldiers probably isn't the best representation of America either and I'm sure we misrepresent ourselves regularly enough there. But Japan probably does need that base, for now.

Yeah I've gotten the impression that Japanese treat the idea of "followers" very different. It explains something that happened to me on Instagram a couple years ago.... (if you are bored and want to read the story, read on! It is not very exciting.) I stumbled across a Japanese cosplayer on Instagram. Just some dude who dressed up as various anime characters and did a good job of it. I followed him. Instagram would occasionally send me "you might also like" type links to his friends, who were also cosplayers. I liked the costumes! I never tried to talk to any of them, I just was happy to see characters from different shows and how they did the clothing and accessories for it. I started following more of them. One day I just decided maybe it was weird to be following a bunch of Japanese cosplayers and maybe I should dial it down. So I unfollowed all but the first guy. I honestly didn't think any of them would care or possibly notice. The next day, every single one of them had blocked me.🤣 THEY KNEW! Maybe they are here somewhere reading all these exchanges and hopefully understand that I didn't mean any offense to any of them. I didn't think they would even notice. Americans are very casual about such things. I'm sad that I probably hurt their feelings.

@seigihakatta Aw. I wonder what I'd do in real life, seeing this. The temptation to pretend not to notice would be normal. But a well dressed person who seems to take care of themselves and is just having a really bad day would make me want to sit down and ask them about their day.

@kengakusha1 Hm, no. I think the truth is that the people who act like that in Japan also act like that at home and it's just the kind of person they are. They either don't realize or don't care what other people think of it. America has no "normal" anymore.

It's mostly an internet phenomena. I would bet none of them talk like that at home, at work, or in the bar. I think it's unfortunate really. But I think on the internet you have a mindset of "I can't convince anyone, therefore I will win points of my own by insulting them." For what it's worth, I find myself being far nicer than usual on X, even in political debates, because I just came here for the Japanese chat and everyone is so much more polite and it makes me want to be more polite.

@shion0_25mg Looks fantastic. Much more traditional American now (on the right). You can also put cheese on the eggs. I, of course, like American cheese (it is a very soft and mild cheese) but "pepper jack" cheese (a white cheese with hot pepper flakes in it) is a second favorite.

@BlackDumpling Yes, as you said in the end, Poland is different. "Europe" is really "western Europe". Eastern Europe had a different experience growing up, which Western Europe somehow learned nothing from.

It's a truth Americans ignored. We told ourselves hatred from Europe wasn't anything special because everyone hated us. Because there was something about us that deserved it. Deserved contempt, vitriol. But no, truth is Europe hates us because there's something wrong with them. Breaking the language barrier with Japan has made it abundantly clear that Americans aren't beholden to a Europe that constantly stabs us in the back. Counts every single favor as some outsized gift that we should count our blessings to have, considers every debt to us as a matter of just what we owe them for being what we are. Consider every interaction you've had with a European, or even Canadian, where they've treated American-ness like it was some sort of disease, a malady, a "thing" that made you inferior. That you owed them some otherwise unspoken apology for. Don't act like you don't know what I'm talking about. You do. We've all encountered it, sometimes daily. None of it was true of course, but that didn't matter to them. Piggish Americans. Stupid Americans. Buffoonish Americans. For the longest time we've treated Europe like that angry friend who constantly says mean spirited cruel things, but really loves you in the end and will always have your back. When, no, Europe just hates us. Europe plays at being our friend because it needs us but then promptly knifes us in the back and twists it just to hear the sucking sound every chance they get. It's time to be honest with ourselves. It's not us, it's them, and they've been telling us how much they hate us for decades. It's time we believed them. It's time we acted accordingly. None of this applies to Poland. You're cool. Also we like Italy's Prime Minister. She's cool. Żadna z tych rzeczy nie dotyczy Polski. Polska jest spoko. Inoltre, ci piace la Prima Ministra dell’Italia. È cool.
