Jokes aside: the original Vice news was The Cut for men, so was digital-age Playboy until about 2019, etc, and maybe the question is not why doesn’t this exist but why did it go extinct (I have some theories)

@katrosenfield Being able to have a convo with someone whose beliefs you may not share but whose irreverance for certain taboo topics you nevertheless can appreciate and even enjoy, is a very normal IRL social skill but a terrible fit for internet culture that rewards accountability-holding

I’ve been thinking lately about context collapse and how the social internet brings us all into contact with cultural products and modes of engagement we would have, in previous eras, never known existed and been happier for the not-knowing; this seems like a good example of that

I'm curious what y'all think of the Red Scare podcasters... A while back, Dasha Nekrasova and Anna Khachiyan hosted fascist misogynist Nick Fuentes on their show, and they had a relaxed, cool, laid-back conversation. More recently, Fuentes went on a mini-rant (as he often does), saying that women only exist "to get fucked." He clarified that women were only whores, nuns, or mothers, nothing else, not scientists, nothing. I dunked, wondering if Nekrasova and Khachiyan would have him on their show again. Khachiyan quote-tweeted me, saying, "I mean, he's not wrong." Well, actually, obviously, he is wrong! Then Glen Greenwald popped in the comments, thinking it was funny that I would think they'd walk back their choice (I didn't actually think that, I was criticizing, not expecting a walk back), and adding that their show was very irony-laden. Which brings me to... What exactly does Anna mean? Do Red Scare (Anna and Dasha) literally agree that women are just there to be fucked, as Fuentes said? (When they're not nuns or mothers.) Or are they being ironic in some way? Or is it all irony, and I'm like all the other fools, thinking that saying horrible things about women, as Fuentes does, is bad, but they are the cool kids, being ironic, and knowing that none of it matters. Jaded irony-drenched edge-lords make me grumpy!

@HistoryBoomer I dont think every conversation needs be an accountability-holding session. People can have cordial conversations with those with whom they might disagree but still enjoy the irreverance with with the person talks about certain taboo topics. Its part of having good social skills

@ggreenwald @Brainfreez30101 @annakhachiyan "Irony-laden." That seems an excuse for so much. As the OP Anna quoted, I knew she wasn't going to walk it back. I was saying it was bad that any woman would host Fuentes. Does "irony" mean she doesn't agree with Fuentes? She implied she did. Edgy irony ends up soulless.

@DinaBelenkaya Kramnick accused Danya of cheating while providing no evidence of it, and the chess world turned Kramnick into a pariah for it. Carlsen heavily implied Hans was cheating OTB and provided no evidence and there was almost no criticism of Carlsen for it. How does he feel about that?

@chesscom I just got a smothered mate in a real game for the first time and I think the postgame coach dialog box should make a bigger deal about it. The generic "nice midgame tactic" just isn't enough here

@PaulCoffey_DL @stellaomalley3 @PatLeahyIT Not trying to sound snarky, but is being in a tricky situation an excuse for not doing journalistic due diligence? And if he is in a tricky situation, in that if he feels as though he cant report fully on a topic without facing internal backlash, then why isnt he speaking up?

@stellaomalley3 @PatLeahyIT Thanks for taking the time to reply🙏 I’m a fan of Pat, working in the IT he’s in a tricky position. The guide from the ICCl is shocking, it shows how far we still have to go before we get this right.

@ColetteColfer @PatLeahyIT Excellent point Colette. This isnt unbiased reporting. Without even asking for a quote from the many organisations that would oppose these measure, the article just functions as a defacto press release for the ICCL. There's no attempt to fully inform the public

But you have only advanced one view - is it enough for an NGO to produce a guide and for a journalist to report on its existence as though the guide is fact? Why not include counter views? If the Catholic Church produced a guide saying all children should be baptised would you seek other opinions? What about research on the potential harms of social transition? The article induces fear and encourages ideological conformity.

@RachelMoiselle Hi Rachel. I do get why you're reluctant to say what party this person represents. Though is it not of import to the public to know this so we can take it in to account when considering voting options in the future and if the party supports this kind of behabiour and/or ideology?

Good afternoon, everyone. I am back with some very positive news. It is with relief that I share that this account has deleted every single one of the hundreds of defamatory, abusive posts he wrote about me since I released my opinion piece with the Sunday Independent two weeks ago. With countless posts about me, this particular account clearly crossed the line into harassment and we were able to source who was behind it. Shockingly (or perhaps not so shockingly), it was traced to a well-known politician in a major Irish political party. This person targeted not only me but my family and our history: ludicrously and obsessively denying our Jewish ancestry, in addition to implying that a photo of antisemitic graffiti in front of the store run by my grandfather’s family (one wherein my grandfather worked for over twenty years) was photoshopped. This person mistook my silence as being evidence of his intimidation campaign’s success, when in reality his relentless harassment and demonstrable lies about my family had spurred us into urgent action privately. While this is a win, the amount of stress that a prominent Irish politician has caused my family and me is unconscionable. It is indicative, at the very least, of a concerning top-down culture in Irish society that intimidates dissenting voices into silence. In practice, we do not have strong freedom of expression in Ireland. But let us focus on the positive: I am significantly relieved for my family and for myself. I look forward to continuing my advocacy without the stress of him hounding me. We had a slam dunk case for defamation and a strong case for harassment against this individual and his party, but we are content with this outcome and will not be pursuing this further. What is most important is that he leaves us alone, and we trust that he will. I kindly request that people do not speculate who or what political party this person is/belongs to. From our perspective, this has been dealt with and we wish to move on. However, all screenshots and evidence are in our possession and any hint of further abuse against me or any member of the Jewish community (in recent days he also called Maurice Cohen a liar), and action will be taken. For my critics I say this: attack my words and ideas as robustly as you wish. I welcome it. But if you descend into personal attacks against me, my family, and our integrity/identity—action will be taken. If you are hiding behind an anonymous account, it will be sourced. Ireland is a democracy and I am an Irish citizen. As much as you may disagree with them, I am entitled to express my opinions without fear for my safety and that of my family. For my supporters I say: go raibh míle maith agaibh/thank you so very much. Truth and decency will always win out, and it has won today. Thank you all for helping me to keep the faith when it was all but lost within me.

@JeremiahDJohns @katrosenfield What do you think is the ratio of people/writers who read her post and came to the same conclusion as you versus those who read it and agreed with her but didn't bother commenting? "Dozens" versus how many? Why is the opinion of the former cohort more important that the latter?

Again, I swear I am not intentionally trying to be rude here, but if I was a writer and dozens of other reasonably large/well-respected writers and commentators kept 'misinterpreting' the posts I was making, at some point I'd have to wonder if the problem was with me and not them. I think you should consider that possibility.

Dude accounted for a lot of the hours I spent watching YouTube. It wasn't just his chess skills either. It was his pacing, his personality, his thorough explanations of his moves and the traps that lay down paths not taken. All gone. I mind it very much that I will never see new content from him again. I mind it immeasurably more that the man who brought me so much happiness passed away young, sad, in pain. And that the demon likely responsible is unpunished. I will never achieve this, but I wish I could play well enough to have @VBkramnik falsely accuse me of cheating.

I'm just incredibly sad for his family and his young kids, genuinely shaken about where this country is headed, and praying that we can find a way to walk ourselves back from the brink. We all have agency here. We all have the ability to choose our words carefully even as we forcefully defend our beliefs. We all have the capacity for grace. We don't have to make things worse.
