The reality that localizers will never admit to is that it is an inherently flawed process by extension of the concept itself. Localization is all about making changes to "adapt media for the target culture," so while less glaring examples may go under the radar, there are tons of unnecessary alterations to scripts. Current examples are brought to light all the time, but are written off with the same parroted "you can't translate 1:1" or "it's not a big deal" (or even claiming said changes are superior to the original) type replies by people whose only goal is to consume as much product as possible with no care for the integrity of anything. Localization's loose approach for what constitutes "faithful translation" is the problem & that is what must be fixed.

Games are for people who enjoy them. Anything can potentially be for anyone, but not everything is for everyone. It sounds similar, but it's an important distinction. When companies/creatives try to appeal to everyone, they end up pleasing no one.

No one with any semblance of common sense expects them to be the "bigger people" in any situation. Ever. The overwhelming levels of resentment & pettiness are expected.

@Scratch_Point_Z @P_loco_2015 It's a cointoss. Sometimes I'm able to evade localizer bullshit by switching to esp or ru, but just as often those translations are based not on the original Japanese, but on an English first-pass translation and no one involved speaks Japanese.

@P_loco_2015 I'm focused on Japanese to English because English is my native language. I'm not too aware of the issues faced by other countries in that regard because I don't play or watch media in those languages to know how it's handled.

@Scratch_Point_Z okay. After all, I'm not the target audience for English translations. If their work makes people detest them, they are the ones affected. My only problem is that the consequences of the lack of professionalism in english affect those who are professional in other languages.

@P_loco_2015 "Activism" isn't the only problem with localization, it's merely a symptom of allowing for unfaithful translations. The key is making sure Japanese media is translated faithfully. Localizer's adding "that extra touch" is precisely what is not wanted or needed.

@Scratch_Point_Z I understand that there's that mistrust.but I think the key would be to have professional voice/translation directors who have the public's trust. Zero freedom/flexibility to adapt It can be suffocating and can prevent "that extra TOUCH" youtu.be/jcreG-bhRRA?si…

The Afroman Trial. -Cops raid Afromans house for bullshit reasons. -Steal money, break his door, fuck his house up. -No criminality found whatsoever, no charges at all pressed on Afroman. -Afroman spends the next 3 years making songs that make fun of all the officers involved by name, even using footage of the raid from his own CCTV cameras. -Songs had titles like "Randy Walters is a son of a bitch" and "Lick Em Low Lisa" accusing one of the officers of being a lesbian and sleeping with the other officers wives. -During the raid one officer looked like he was about to eat some lemon pound cake sitting on Afromans counter, Afroman made a whole album calling the officer fat. -The cops get mad and file a lawsuit for defamation. -Afroman turns up to court in a whole American flag suit. -Officers performatively mald and cry while listening to the songs really trying to oversell how badly the songs upset them. -One officer was suing because Afroman made a whole song about him saying he was fucking the officers wife. When the officer was asked if Afroman was really fucking his wife, he said "I don't know". Nuking his own case and establishing that there is a non-zero chance that Afroman might actually be fucking his wife. -As his only witness for the trial, Afroman brought a deputies EX FUCKING WIFE. -The jury ruled completely in favour of Afroman. This entire thing has been a great win for free speech and absolutely fucking hilarious.

@Scratch_Point_Z it's just kinda a sore spot for me because I watched in real time everything I ever loved get destroyed, and people foolishly championed it due to them and their kind and open hearts. They were taken advantage of, but they couldn't see it until 10 FUCKING YEARS. That's crazy!!!

English translations of Japanese media cannot begin to improve until this person & everyone like her are deported from Japan & forever blacklisted from the industry. Unfortunately, this is but one head of the localizer hydra infecting Japanese media with poor attempts at creativity & changes based on their fragile sensibilities. These localizers are incapable of setting aside their personal biases to translate faithfully, thus they are not equipped to provide a service that respects the original work.

@Scratch_Point_Z ah, but you did. Entertainment as a whole has been under attack for a good decade's time, and I'm not talking about you individually necessarily, but more the collective YOU, because I also tried to warn people back then, about this infiltration, and just got waved off. YGWFD
