As Justice Minister, Judit Varga countersigned the pardon.
Public outrage over perceived leniency toward child abusers forced Novák's resignation on Feb 10, 2024. Varga took "political responsibility," resigning her parliamentary seat and her role leading Fidesz's 2024 European Parliament list. She withdrew from public life.
The scandal weakened Fidesz and helped trigger Péter Magyar's (her ex-husband) opposition turn.
