Astronomers have discovered 128 new moons orbiting Saturn, bringing its total to 274 and surpassing Jupiter's 95 confirmed moons. The discoveries were made using the Canada France Hawaii telescope and a technique called "shift and stack," which identifies faint objects against the sky. These moons are "irregular" and small, often just a few kilometers across. The new moons are grouped in clusters, suggesting they are fragments from collisions in Saturn's past. The findings provide a glimpse into the early solar system's dynamics and may offer insights into the origin of Saturn's rings. The moons' discovery has been recognized by the International Astronomical Union, with names to be assigned from Norse, Gallic, and Canadian Inuit mythology.

An international team of researchers has captured the most detailed image to date of a cosmic filament, a structure within the vast cosmic web that connects galaxies across the universe. This filament stretches ~ 3 million light-years and links two galaxies that existed when the universe was ~ 2 billion years old. Using the Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) instrument on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile, the team conducted extensive observations, dedicating hundreds of hours to a single region of the sky. This effort resulted in a high-definition image that reveals the filament's precise shape and structure. The findings indicate that the gas within this filament directly connects to the gas in the host galaxies, providing essential material for star formation. 👉 arxiv.org/pdf/2406.17035

Neuroscience News@NeuroscienceNew·
Prenatal Stress Timing Shapes Infant Stress Response A new study reveals that prenatal stress affects newborns differently depending on when during pregnancy it occurs and the infant's sex. Researchers closely monitored maternal stress levels weekly from mid- to late pregnancy and then examined infants' responses to mild stressors at six months of age. They discovered that stress experienced earlier in pregnancy had a stronger impact on girls, influencing their cortisol response and temperament, whereas boys were more affected by maternal stress later in gestation. Previous studies typically stopped assessing stress around week 34, missing critical late pregnancy effects on boys. This research provides new insights into the precise timing of stress sensitivity, helping clarify earlier misconceptions. Future assessments are planned to explore these effects throughout childhood, potentially leading to targeted interventions.
