The "free" piano is one of the most elegant negative-value assets in the American economy. An upright piano weighs 400-900 lbs. Moving one costs $200-$600. Tuning after a move runs $100-$300. Annual tuning to keep it playable is another $100-$200. And if the thing breaks or you change your mind, disposal costs $250-$550 for a junk removal crew to haul it out. So the true cost of a "free" piano in year one is $300-$900 before you play a single note. Over five years with annual tuning you're looking at $800-$1,900 all-in on an instrument that depreciates to $0 the second it goes out of tune and nobody in the house plays. The reason every listing says "must pick up" is because the seller ran this exact math in reverse. Hiring movers to deliver it costs more than the piano is worth. Paying for disposal costs more than the piano is worth. Listing it for free and making YOU absorb the moving cost is the cheapest way to get a 700-lb object out of a living room. The piano is free because the disposal cost is the real price, and you're the one paying it.

NEW: Tulsa, Oklahoma, has unveiled the state's first-ever "musical road" that plays "This Land is Your Land" when drivers drive over it. The new feature can be experienced when drivers pass over the Southwest Boulevard Bridge. The taxpayer price tag works out to about $5,800 per second of music, totaling $110,000.
